Diane Dimond: Murderabilia: Our Fascination With Serial Killers

Do you collect anything? My dear Aunt Isabel used to collect little spoons that she proudly displayed in a wall cabinet. Grandma collected tea cups. I began a collection of beautiful hand bells.

Well, some people collect items that are much more macabre -- items that have a connection to notorious serial killers.

How macabre? Would you believe these collectors buy serial killer's autographed photos, artwork and handwritten letters sent to people outside prison walls? Even an envelope bearing a handwritten return address commands a pretty penny. The murderer's fingernail clippings, dirty socks or any other object that can be authenticated as genuine ranks a place of honor on some people's mantle. But those are not the most shocking serial killer items up for sale on the Internet.

Andy Kahan, the Houston Police Department's victim rights advocate, has dedicated much of the last 15 years to following -- and fighting -- this bizarre form of commerce. Kahan told me he got interested in making sure serial killers could never profit from their crimes after reading an article about Arthur Shawcross who sold paintings and poems out of his cell in upstate New York. This serial killer had sexually abused, mutilated and killed at least 14 people (including two children) in the 70s and 80s. Some Shawcross paintings sold for nearly $600.

"I thought to myself, 'this just not right,'" Kahan said. His research led him to eBay where items from several notorious killers were being sold. Kahan vowed to spread the word about the morbid practice and actually bought up some of the most bizarre offerings to use during lectures on why there should be a law against the practice. He called these odd collectibles "Murderabilia" and the name has stuck.

Kahan bought hair from Charlie Manson that had been fashioned into a swastika, dirt from a crawlspace-tomb at John Wayne Gacy's house and an action figure of cannibal killer Jeffrey Dahmer that is marketed with this little ditty: "Open me up for a sure delight and see what I ate for dinner last night." Unzip the doll and mock body parts fall out. Among the most disgusting thing for sale, according to Kahan, was a bag of rocks and dirt taken from the Texas road where in 1998 a black man named James Bryd was dragged to his death by three White Supremacists.

"From a victims perspective selling murderabilia is about the most nauseating and disgusting thing that could happen," Kahan told me. "It is like being gutted all over again by the justice system."

Kahan has made it his life's calling to rid the internet of this ugly profit-making booty. eBay finally gave in to his persistent calls and lobbying and has now banned the sale of murderabilia from its site. Kahan works hard to get states with the most serial killers in prison to pass "Notoriety for Profit" laws to make sure none of the money goes to the criminals. So far, Alabama, California, Florida, Michigan, Montana, New Jersey, Utah and Texas have done so.

Many people think the so-called Son of Sam laws prohibiting murderers from profiting by selling their life stories are still in effect but they were declared an unconstitutional violation of free speech by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1991. The Notoriety for Profit laws are designed to follow the money and, therein, lies the difference.

In the meantime, there are still grisly offerings out there: Calendars, trading cards, t-shirts and even snow globes glorifying the grisly crimes of these killers. A handwritten recipe card from Dorthea Puentes for her tuna casserole is one of the coveted finds. Puentes ran a rooming house in Sacramento, Ca. in the 80s and killed at least nine of the elderly boarders who dared to complain that she was cashing and keeping their social security checks. Then there are the gravestone chips from Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein's final resting place. His repulsive story was the inspiration for the movies Psycho and Silence of the Lambs.

After the purveyors of murderabilia found the eBay door closed sellers simply started their own websites and their ghastly business flourishes. As Kahan says, "I have no problem with those who are collecting the stuff. My problem is someone profiting from it. It is blood money plain and simple."

While some of the convicts have entered into shady "trades" with sellers -- mailing out their personal items in return for small gifts or money deposited into their prison accounts -- many of the killers had no clue that what they were sending from prison was then being sold at auction sites.

"(David) Berkowitz had no idea his things were being sold and is violently opposed to it," Dr. Scott Bonn told me. "After having been born-again in 1987 ... he thinks it is a sacrilege." As an author and professor of criminology Bonn befriended the so-called Son of Sam Killer as part of his research for an upcoming book called, Why We Love Serial Killers.

So why are we so fascinated by them? And what prompts people to collect these awful souvenirs? Dr. Bonn believes the media elevates these larger-than-life ghouls to morbid rock stars status. They become celebrity monsters.

"It's an adrenalin rush and we love to have the crap scared out of us." Bonn said. "That, and we're riveted to the dark side of humanity... they define the outside parameters of what one human being can do to another."

Indeed, but I still don't want a bag of dirt from a crime scene on the shelf with my bells.

Leak: Motorola DROID MAXX For Verizon Breaks Cover ? Sports Capacitive Buttons, Kevlar, And No Front Logos

The upcoming DROID MAXX for Verizon Wireless has been rumored for a while now, but @evleaks has just posted an image of the device. Here it is in all its glory.

BOd7rxMCQAAl4V3

The design doesn't look like a radical departure from past Verizon DROIDs made by Motorola. It looks a bit closer to the RAZR M than the DROID RAZR MAXX HD, though. The kevlar texture wraps around a bit and the corners aren't as pointy. Additionally, it appears Motorola is going back to capacitive buttons after using on-screen ones in the last generation. Also of note, there are no logos on the front of the device. That would give it a very cool "2001 monolith" vibe ? similar to Nexus devices.

We're told @evleaks is confident this is the final look. No specs are available yet, but the model number is expected to be XT1080M.

Nicaragua, Venezuela offer asylum to Snowden

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? The presidents of Nicaragua and Venezuela offered Friday to grant asylum to NSA leaker Edward Snowden, one day after leftist South American leaders gathered to denounce the rerouting of Bolivian President Evo Morales' plane over Europe amid reports that the American was aboard.

Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela and Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua made their offers during separate speeches in their home countries Friday afternoon. Snowden, who is being sought by the United States, has asked for asylum in numerous countries, including Nicaragua and Venezuela.

"As head of state, the government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela decided to offer humanitarian asylum to the young American Edward Snowden so that he can live in the homeland" of independence leader Simon Bolivar and the late President Hugo Chavez without "persecution from the empire," Maduro said, referring to the United States.

Chavez, who often criticized U.S.-style capitalism, would likely have engaged in the same kind of defiance. In a 2006 speech to the U.N. General Assembly of world leaders, Chavez called President George W. Bush the devil, saying the podium reeked of sulfur after the U.S. president's address. He also accused Washington of plotting against him, expelled several diplomats and drug-enforcement agents and threatened to stop sending oil to the U.S.

Maduro made the offer during a speech marking the anniversary of Venezuela's independence. It was not immediately clear if there were any conditions to Venezuela's offer. He added that several other Latin American governments have also expressed their intention of taking a similar stance by offering asylum for the cause of "dignity."

But his critics said Maduro's decision is not but an attempt to veil the current undignified conditions of Venezuela, including one of the world's highest inflation rates and a shortage of basic products like toilet paper.

"The asylum doesn't fix the economic disaster, the record inflation, an upcoming devaluation (of the currency), and the rising crime rate," Venezuelan opposition leader Henrique Capriles said in his Twitter account. Maduro beat Capriles in April's presidential election, but Capriles has not recognized defeat and has called it an electoral fraud.

Asked earlier this week about the possibility that any countries in the region would offer Snowden asylum, Geoff Thale, program director at the Washington Office on Latin America think tank, said that he thought Ortega would be careful not to damage his country's relationship with the U.S.

"Ortega has been tremendously successful at exploiting both the ALBA relationship and the U.S. relationship," Thale said, referring to the ALBA leftist trade bloc that provides Nicaragua with petroleum subsidies. Although Ortega is publicly seen as anti-American, "Nicaragua and the U.S. cooperate very closely on drug interdiction and the U.S. and Nicaraguan militaries work very closely, too," Thale said before the asylum offer was made.

Ortega said Friday he was willing to make Maduro's same offer "if circumstances allow it," although he didn't say what the right circumstances would be when he spoke during a speech in Managua.

He said the Nicaraguan embassy in Moscow received Snowden's application for asylum and that it is studying the request.

"We have the sovereign right to help a person who felt remorse after finding out how the United States was using technology to spy on the whole world, and especially its European allies," Ortega said.

The offers came following a flap about the rerouting of Bolivian President Evo Morales' plane in Europe earlier this week amid reports that Snowden might have been aboard.

Spain on Friday said it had been warned along with other European countries that Snowden, a former U.S. intelligence worker, was aboard the Bolivian presidential plane, an acknowledgement that the manhunt for the fugitive leaker had something to do with the plane's unexpected diversion to Austria.

It is unclear whether the United States warned Madrid about the Bolivian president's plane. U.S. officials will not detail their conversations with European countries, except to say that they have stated the U.S.'s general position that it wants Snowden back.

Maduro joined other leftist South American presidents Thursday in Cochabamba, Bolivia, to rally behind Morales and denounce the rerouting incident.

President Barack Obama has publicly displayed a relaxed attitude toward Snowden's movements, saying last month that he wouldn't be "scrambling jets to get a 29-year-old hacker."

But the drama surrounding the flight of Morales, whose plane was abruptly rerouted to Vienna after apparently being denied permission to fly over France, suggests that pressure is being applied behind the scenes.

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo told Spanish National Television that "they told us that the information was clear, that he was inside."

He did not identify who "they" were and declined to say whether he had been in contact with the U.S. But he said that European countries' decisions were based on the tip. France has since sent a letter of apology to the Bolivian government.

Meanwhile, secret-spilling website WikiLeaks said that Snowden, who is still believed to be stuck in a Moscow airport's transit area, had put in asylum applications to six new countries. He had already sought asylum from more than 20 countries. Many have turned him down.

Wikileaks said in a message posted to Twitter on Friday that it wouldn't be identifying the countries involved "due to attempted U.S. interference."

Icelandic lawmakers introduced a proposal in Parliament on Thursday to grant immediate citizenship to Snowden, but the idea received minimal support.

EE details shared and PAYG data plans, NFC payment service, new router

There was only one form of bacon present at EE's breakfast event today, but plenty more to chew on, as the UK 4G provider shed light on its new shared plans and PAYG data-only offerings. The sharing scheme, launching on July 17th, will put up to five devices on one bill and allow them to feed from the same data allowance. Starting with any regular contract, you can add other phones or devices at any time. Snagging another phone SIM for one year costs £12 per month, or £17 if you only need it for 30 days -- you can also get handsets to go with those SIMs for additional dinero. Every phone plan you tack on includes unlimited calls and texts, but if you only need a SIM for data, it'll cost £5 each month on a two-year contract, £8 for a 30-day commitment, and more if you want a USB dongle, MiFi hotspot or tablet on top. EE had plenty more to tell us, so head below the fold if you're up for the full rundown.

Asus VG248QE

Ask any hardcore gamer what matters most and nine out of 10 times you'll get a one-word answer?speed. It's no secret that fast frame rates not only give you smoother game play but they can also give you an edge over those unfortunate souls who have to deal with lag and choppy motion. You can spend thousands on a tricked out gaming rig but if your monitor can't display the action smoothly you're not getting the most out of your hardware investment. With the Asus VG248QE , you don't have to worry about ghosting, lag, or choppy action. This 24-inch gaming monitor offers a 1-millisecond (gray-to-gray) pixel response and a 144Hz refresh rate, and it is 3D capable. Its color accuracy is good (not great) and its stand lets you position the panel in any direction for optimal (and comfortable) viewing. Off angle viewing is less than stellar though, and a few more I/O ports would be nice.

Design and Features
The VG248QE uses a design similar to its bigger sibling, the Asus VG278HE. It sports thin glossy black bezels, a glossy black cabinet, and a matching stand that consists of a round base with a Lazy Susan swivel mechanism and a telescoping mounting arm that offers pivot, height, and tilt adjustability. The base has a 3D logo, signifying that the panel is 3D ready, but as with the Asus VG278HE, the monitor does not come with the Nvidia 3D Vision 2 kit needed to view multi-dimensional content, although you can pick one up online for around $130 or so.

There are six clearly labeled function buttons (including the power switch) nestled beneath the lower bezel on the right side. Several of the buttons act as hot keys for things like picture presets and the GamePlus feature, which offers a game timer and an aiming scope to help zero in on your targets. All three video inputs are digital (HDMI, DisplayPort, dual-link DVI) and all are located at the rear of the cabinet facing downward. They are joined by an audio input and a headphone jack. There aren't any USB ports on this model, nor is there an analog video input or a webcam. However, it does include a set of embedded 2-watt speakers that are moderately loud but slightly tinny sounding.

As with every Asus monitor I've reviewed in recent years, the VG248QE offers Splendid Technology, which is really just a fancy name for picture presets. This monitor has six presets, including Scenery, Standard, Theater, Game, sRGB, and Night View modes. Other picture settings include Brightness, Contrast, Color Saturation, Skin Tone, and Color Temperature. There's also a Smart View setting that adds luminance for side angle viewing, but the view from dead center is compromised when this setting is enabled and is best left disabled.

The VG248QE comes with a dual-link DVI cable and an audio cable but you're on your own when it comes to HDMI and DisplayPort cables. The monitor is covered by a three year parts, labor, and backlight warranty.

Performance
For the most part, the VG248QE is a solid performer. Its color accuracy wasn't terrible but it wasn't ideal either. As shown in the chromaticity chart below, the 1920 x 1080 TN panel produced oversaturated greens, but blues and reds were much closer to their CIE (International Commission On Illumination) coordinates. Greens did appear to be a bit heavy in my test photos but not heavy enough to cause tinting.

The VG248QE was able to display almost every shade of gray from the DisplayMate 64-Step Grayscale test, but darks shades of gray could have been a bit darker. There was a hint of clipping at the light end of the scale, which is not uncommon for a TN panel.

As is the case with most TN monitors, the VG248QE has relatively narrow viewing angles. There was some color shifting at around 50-degrees from center from the side and the view from the bottom was dark. This becomes more of an issue when the panel is rotated and the bottom angle becomes the left side angle.

The panel's 1-millisecond pixel response and 144Hz refresh rate combined to deliver an outstanding gaming experience. There was no apparent lag or image smearing while playing Burnout Paradise while connected to a PS3 console. Results were similar while playing the PC-based Far Cry 2 and while watching 2012 on blu-ray disc. Panning scenes were crisp and stutter-free.

The VG248QE used 25 watts of power during testing, which is comparable to the BenQ XL2420TX (28 watts). Neither could touch the efficiency of the Viewsonic VG2437mc-LED, which used only 19 watts of power.

The Asus VG248QE is a capable 24-inch gaming monitor that uses 144Hz refresh technology and a speedy 1-ms pixel response to deliver smooth game play. Its viewing angle performance comes up short and it lacks the gear needed for 3D gaming, but if smooth motion handling is a must, this monitor delivers. That said, our current Editors' Choice for mid-sized gaming monitors, the BenQ XL2420TX, also offers very good motion performance and comes with a multitude of I/O ports and a 3D Vision 2 kit, but it'll cost you a couple of hundred dollars more.

Try getting a weapon on a plane and you'll end up on...Instagram?

This Instagram image was taken by the TSA. No, really. It shows a weapon they confiscated from someone's carry on luggage at Austin Bergstrom airport. The TSA now has their own Instagram account and has taken to posting images of some of the things they're confiscating at airports across the U.S. It's both shocking, and re-assuring at the same time; shocking items such as loaded guns were found at all, but re-assuring that the TSA is visibly doing a job to protect our safety, even if they are telling us about it themselves.

The TSA is no stranger to using the power of the Internet to talk about their successes, but with the enormous, global reach of Instagram, this latest method really can reach everyone. Further still, they're pretty good Instagram photos as well; composed, 'properly' filtered and framed!

It could be seen as an unusual tactic, but as todays world ever changes towards mobile, and apps like Instagram are great examples of this, there's no reason why an enforcement agency like the TSA shouldn't use mobile to get their point across. What do you guys think of this? Any other government agencies you'd like to see take to Instagram?

Space Shuttle Atlantis Exhibit 'Breathtaking,' NASA Fans Say

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. ? Upon first seeing Atlantis, a space shuttle that's been to space and back 33 times, it?s not uncommon to gasp ? or cry. The retired orbiter is displayed at an angle, with its cargo bay doors open and robotic arm outstretched, and it seems to be just barely out of reach. The sight is arresting, to say the least. The public got its first official look at the display Saturday (June 29), when the Space Shuttle Atlantis exhibition opened here at NASA's Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. "I'm not going to lie ? I shed a tear," said Jess Johnting of Boca Raton, Fla., an avid space fan who said she'd long been looking forward to the opening of the show. [ See photos of the new Space Shuttle Atlantis exhibit ] The grand opening was attended by a massive crowd and more than 40 astronauts representing all 33 of Atlantis' missions to space. It "launched" with a bang as sparks and smoke appeared to furl out of the humongous life-size fuel tank and solid rocket boosters guarding the entrance to the Atlantis building. Visitors then proceeded inside, where a giant screen shows a film on the origin and history of the space shuttle program . "I can't believe how long it took to build," said Brittney Frey, age 13, of McDonough, Ga. "It's amazing how far it's come," added her brother, Aaron Frey, age 10. After the video, visitors come face to face with Atlantis herself. "It was breathtaking. It blew my mind," said John Hurley of West Palm Beach, Fla. The sight of the magnificent shuttle grounded for good, and beginning life as a museum exhibit, was also hard for some. "I have mixed emotions. It's kind of bittersweet," Jessica Hurley said. Nonetheless, the Hurleys said the presentation here did Atlantis justice, and they planned to come back "over and over again," she added. Atlantis dominates the center of a multistory building that allows views of the orbiter from many angles . The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is unique in displaying the vehicle as if it were mid-mission, on orbit. The other retired space shuttles, at Washington, D.C.'s Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Los Angeles' California Science Center, and New York's Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, all present their orbiters in horizontal position. "The size of it ? what you see on TV doesn't compare to real life," said Ricky Rawls of Crystal River, Fla. "It's an awesome flying machine." Many said Atlantis was larger than they expected. "It's just amazing, incredible," said Mike Kitslaar of Orlando, Fla., who'd been following the preparation of? Atlantis ?for display via the KSC Visitor Complex's online webcam. Organizers of the exhibition said their prime hope for the show is to inspire the next generation of scientists, astronauts and explorers. Judging by the awed reactions of many kids Saturday, they may be well on their way toward that goal. "It was really cool," said Markis Cheng, age 10, of Arcadia, Calif., who said he'd like to go to space someday. "I've always wanted to see what happens when you float." In the past decade, China as sunk some impressive numbers to preserve its forests, but until now there hasn't been much data to give a true picture of how it has simultaneously affected both the people and the environment.

Michigan State University, partnered with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has capitalized on their long history of research in the Wolong Nature Reserve to get a complete picture of the environmental and socioeconomic effects of payments for ecosystem services programs.

"Performance and prospects of payments for ecosystem services programs: evidence from China" has been published in the Journal of Environmental Management. In it, Wu Yang, a doctoral student in Michigan State University's Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability and center director Jianguo "Jack" Liu, the Rachel Carson Chair in Sustainability, outline the wins and losses in one of the world's richest areas of biodiversity, and home to the endangered giant pandas.

China's tally: $15 billion to ban logging encourage new forests; $32 billion to persuade 32 million rural households to return 8.8 million hectares of cropland back to forest.

The group examined both the people and the environment from as big a picture as trends of the forest from decades of land cover maps, to surveying individual households to understand how their behaviors changed as policies were introduced. Payments for ecosystem services programs programs in which people were given incentives to change their behavior so the forest around them could recover have been an enormous effort in China and worldwide.

The work found that China's offering people incentives to change how they live to boost the environment did benefit the forest and the environment but not without a toll on the people who live there.

The article emphasizes the importance of integrating local conditions and understanding underlying mechanisms to enhance the performance of payments for ecosystem services programs. The article also notes that understanding some of the impacts raises questions for future policy about whether such policies could be made more efficient, is it ethical to make conservation gains at the cost of people's livelihoods, cultural identity and other issues.

In addition to Yang and Liu, the article was written by CSIS members Wei Liu, a former doctoral student; assistant professor Andrs Via, research associate Junyan Luo and former doctoral student Guangming He. Also contributing were Zhiyun Ouyang from the Chinese Academy of Science and Hemin Zhang of China's Center for Giant Panda Research and Conservation.

The work was supported by the National Science Foundation, NASA, Michigan State University's Environmental Science and Policy Program, and Graduate Office.

New Mental Health Center For Men In South South Florida - www.mensmentalhealthcenter.com

PRLog (Press Release) - Jun. 30, 2013 - PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. -- A new mental health center for men is now opened in Pembroke Pines, Florida. This new, Men's Mental Health Center, which was founded by Psychotherapist, Dr. Percy Ricketts, is designed to help men keep their mental health intact. According to Dr. Ricketts, while many traditional mental health facilities focus on meeting the needs of women and children, there are very few places in the entire United States that focus on meeting the very unique and specific mental health needs of men. He indicated that historically men are not socialized to seek help, because they feel help-seeking is associated with weakness, being out of control, and not being able to manage their own affairs appropriately. Consequently, many men refuse to seek help, unless they are in crisis. The good news, according to Dr. Ricketts, is that men?s outlooks appear to have been changing slowly over the years, and there is a more hopeful future for those who desire to improve. He indicated that men today seem more willing to express their feelings openly, which would never have been the case even a decade or so ago. Still, ?he suggested, if this positive trend is to continue, men need to be educated on their physical and mental health and they must be encouraged to seek help and to get regular check-ups and tune-ups. In order for this to be realized, however, he suggested that the ?right? environment must be created, especially for men's mental health care - one in which men feel safe, where there is confidentially, understanding and empathy, and where they can feel free to remove their masks and express their deepest, hidden feelings and opinions. This, according to Dr. Ricketts, is the main idea behind the Men?s Mental Health Center - a place designed to help men keep their mental health intact.

Whether there are concerns about their personal lives, family, work, spirituality or relationships, or, they might just need a professional sounding board or a mental health tune-up, men will find it all, here, at the Men?s Mental Health Center, Pembroke Pines. At the Men's Mental Health Center, there are a number of products and services that are designed especially with the unique mental health needs of men in mind. They include maintenance and tune-up mental health packages for men, which are tailored specifically to help them address their own individual, specific concerns with a seasoned male mental health professional. Each man leaves the center with a special " Man's Take-home Care Package" that is filled with numerous useful resources just for himself.
