Fishing on Trips ? Tips for First Timers

If you enjoy fishing, then you will enjoy spending some time outdoors, on the water with a rod in your hand. What if you are traveling with children or someone that has not had this opportunity yet. A trip is a great way to open the world into new things. You may even find that there are a few helpful ways that you can learn how to improve your ability as well. If you are visiting a location where there are large lakes or the ocean is nearby, make sure you book a few early mornings where you can head out onto the water truly to enjoy the opportunities there.

Making it Enjoyable

When it comes to ensuring you get the best catch plan fishing expeditions and opportunities early on. For example, if you are visiting an area that is popular, be sure to book your reservations in advance. This way, you ensure there is no reason you will miss the big bite. The following tips can help you to make this trip an enjoyable one for anyone who is heading out onto the water for their first outing.

Do not buy or bring your own gear unless you must. Not only is it expensive to take onto a plane, but if you are traveling a long distance, you risk losing it or it breaking. In addition, most areas with charter services will provide you with rental options. These are often ideal for the area, too.

Do rent a charter. Locate one that can provide you with the best possible action. That means doing a bit of research before you even leave for your trip. Be sure that those you are planning to fish with understand that at least one of you is new to the experience. This can help make the trip more enjoyable for everyone involved.

It is also possible to find great locations with educational programs. If you are traveling with children who you want to learn to fish, find one of these programs meant for the youngsters. That way, they can rest easy and really enjoy the experience. They may even become pros before the end of the trip.

Fishing is a fantastic opportunity for those who are traveling. There is nothing quite as relaxing as sitting in a boat, deep in the water, in the peace of dawn waiting for the fish to bite. As you do so, perhaps for the first time, remember to make it worthwhile. To do that, learn from the best so you can visit the best fishing holes in the area. Best of all, do it with those you enjoy being with and you may even start a tradition.

For a great fishing experience, come to Florida. Fishing in Navarre Beach, FL, offers a variety of options: fishing from the Gulf Coast?s longest pier to kayaking. For more information visit: http://www.floridabeachestorivers.com.

Fear and Loathing 40 Years Later

Decades after it was written, in fact, Fear and Loathing ?72 is still considered a kind of bible of political reporting. It?s given birth to a whole generation of clich?s and literary memes, with many campaign reporters (including, unfortunately, me) finding themselves consciously or unconsciously making villainous Nixons, or Quislingian Muskies, or Christlike McGoverns out of each new quadrennial batch of presidential pretenders.

When our eyes first landed upon the device from Gigabyte you see above, it took them a few seconds to work out exactly what they were looking at. There's a reason for that, though, as the Aivia Xenon -- as it is known -- lives a double life. By day, it's an ordinary PC mouse, with support for multi-touch gestures. By night (well, and day too, if you choose) it's a portable touchpad. The hybrid device offers 1000DPI resolution, can be used up to 10 meters away (for presentations etc.) and comes with software that lets you create custom gestures. If you have two birds, but only space for one stone, head down to the source link for more info.

Rewriting quantum chips with a beam of light

Tuesday, June 26, 2012

The promise of ultrafast quantum computing has moved a step closer to reality with a technique to create rewritable computer chips using a beam of light. Researchers from The City College of New York (CCNY) and the University of California Berkeley (UCB) used light to control the spin of an atom's nucleus in order to encode information.

The technique could pave the way for quantum computing, a long-sought leap forward toward computers with processing speeds many times faster than today's. The group will publish their results on June 26 in Nature Communications.

Current electronic devices are approaching the upper limits in processing speed, and they rely on etching a pattern into a semiconductor to create a chip or integrated circuit. These patterns of interconnections serve as highways to shuttle information around the circuit, but there is a drawback.

"Once the chip is printed, it can only be used one way," explained Dr. Jeffrey Reimer, UCB professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering and the study co-author.

The team ? including CCNY Professor of Physics Carlos Meriles and PhD graduate students Jonathan King of UCB and Yunpu Li of CCNY? saw a remedy for these problems in the emerging sciences of spintronics and quantum computing.

They have developed a technique to use laser light to pattern the alignment of "spin" within atoms so that the pattern can be rewritten on the fly. Such a technique may one day lead to rewritable spintronic circuits.

Digital electronics and conventional computing rely on translating electrical charges into the zeros and ones of binary code. A "spintronics" computer, on the other hand, would use the quantum property of electron spin, which enables the electron to store any number between zero and one.

Imagine this as if the electron were a "yin-yang" symbol in which the proportions of the dark and light areas?representing values from zero to one?could vary at will. This would mean that multiple computations could be done simultaneously, which would amp up processing power.

Attempts at using electrons for quantum computing have been plagued, however, by the fact that electron spins switch back and forth rapidly. Thus, they make very unstable vehicles to hold information. To suppress the random switching back and forth of electrons, the UCB and CCNY researchers used laser light to produce long-lasting nuclear spin "magnets" that can pull, push, or stabilize the spins of the electrons.

They did this by illuminating a sample of gallium arsenide ? the same semiconductor used in cell phone chips ? with a pattern of light, much as lithography etches a physical pattern onto a traditional integrated circuit. The illuminated pattern aligned the spins of all the atomic nuclei, and, thus, their electrons, at once, creating a spintronic circuit.

"What you could have is a chip you can erase and rewrite on the fly with just the use of a light beam," said Professor Meriles. Changing the pattern of light altered the layout of the circuit instantly.

"If you can actually rewrite with a beam of light and alter this pattern, you can make the circuit morph to adapt to different requirements," he added. "Imagine what you can make a system like that do for you!"

Nora Ephron Didn't Feel Limited By Romantic Comedies

'I'm not complaining about any box that I'm in, because I can write whatever I want,' late writer/director tells MTV News in 2009.

No matter how it happens, when or where, it is always sad to hear of the passing of a celebrated, talented and respected public figure like Academy Award-nominated screenwriter, director and playwright Nora Ephron, who died of pneumonia at age 71 on Tuesday (June 26).

Ephron is best known for writing and/or directing some of Hollywood's most famous and successful romantic comedies like "When Harry Met Sally ... ," "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail." Her final film as writer and director was 2009's "Julie & Julia," and during the promotion for that film, which starred Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, Ephron revealed to MTV News that although she was happy to be known for her romantic comedies, she also dabbled in a few politically charged subjects that had yet to be made into feature films.

"You should see my closet, it's full of political scripts," Ephron revealed, adding that while she'd love to see one of her many political scripts turned into a film, she wasn't holding out hope that Hollywood would let her take a turn from romantic comedies to political dramedies.

"Forget it," Ephron said of wanting to direct one of her political scripts. "I mean yes, but the [movies] you get made are not necessarily all the things you write."

When asked if she felt at all limited by being most well-known for her expertise in the rom-com genre, Ephron said she felt nothing but gratitude for how much her successful romantic comedies have done in providing her with the freedom to explore other unrelated subjects.

"I'm not complaining about any box that I'm in, because I can write whatever I want," Ephron said with sincerity. "Fortunately, I'm not just in the movie business, so I don't feel that the only way I can express myself is by the movies I make."

Share your condolences for Ephron's family and friends in the comments below.

(AP) ? Ryan Lochte won Round 1 of his showdown with Michael Phelps at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials. Phelps won't have to wait long for a second chance to take down his rival.

They'll compete in the 200-meter freestyle preliminaries on Tuesday morning, with the 16 fastest qualifiers advancing to the evening semifinals. Lochte owns the upper hand in that event, having beaten Phelps at last year's world championships in Shanghai.

Any butterflies two of the world's best swimmers may have felt going into the eight-day meet should be gone since both qualified for the London Games on the first night of the trials. Lochte became the first swimmer to make the U.S. team with his win over Phelps in the grueling 400 individual medley on Monday.

"I can sit down and take a deep breath and relax," Lochte said. "I can just do what I love to do and have fun and just race."

It was a three-man race between world champion Lochte, world record holder Phelps, and Tyler Clary, the fourth-fastest swimmer ever in the event. Each of them owned the lead at different points in the race ? Phelps in the butterfly, Clary in the backstroke and Lochte in the breaststroke.

"All three of us were side by side by side and we were neck and neck," Phelps said. "You could hear the excitement of the crowd and that's something that definitely played a pretty big role in giving me a little extra energy the last 150. I was very pleased with that."

Once Lochte took over, he kept on going, building a body-length lead over Phelps and Clary heading into the final 100 meters. He eased up in the closing 20 meters and touched first in 4 minutes, 7.06 seconds. Phelps took second at 4:07.89. Their times were the top two in the world this year.

"That time was not good at all. I know I'm capable of going way faster," Lochte said. "There's definitely a lot of places during that race where I knew I could go faster, I just didn't. I just had to do what I had to do to get my hand on the wall first."

Lochte beat Phelps for the first time ever in the event, snapping a string of nine consecutive losses to his rival in the event dating to 2002.

"It really doesn't say much," Lochte said. "It's a rivalry that we've had for almost eight years now. We've just been switching back and forth. It's hard to say who's the best swimmer because we're both great racers."

Clary came home in third at 4:09.92, a bitter finish for the silver medalist at worlds last year. Phelps didn't swim the event in Shanghai, and since winning it as one of his historic eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics he had sworn he wouldn't compete in it again.

Now he's back, and Clary finds himself the odd man out. Clary didn't speak with reporters after the race.

Lochte is entered in 11 events this week, but he was coy about exactly where he'll turn up.

"We're going to pick and choose what events day-by-day and see how I feel," he said.

Phelps didn't win, but he made a little history of his own, becoming the first American male swimmer to qualify for a fourth Olympics.

"We knew that (losing) was a distinct possibility in this event," his coach, Bob Bowman, said. "I don't think we had any illusions. He knows that he's in the range. He knows he can get better."

Peter Vanderkaay made his third Olympic team by winning the 400 freestyle in 3:47.47. He was joined by training partner Conor Dwyer, who finished second.

Elizabeth Beisel became the first woman to qualify for the U.S. team with an easy victory in the 400 IM. She won in 4:31.74 to earn a berth in her second consecutive games. Caitlin Leverenz grabbed the second spot.

Some big names will hit the pool for the first time in Tuesday's preliminary heats. Missy Franklin, the 17-year-old Colorado swimmer tabbed for stardom in London, competes in the 100 backstroke; Amanda Beard opens her quest to make a fifth Olympic team in the 100 breaststroke; and Janet Evans, making a comeback at 40, goes in the 400 freestyle, although her stronger event is the 800 free.

Beard faces a loaded field in the 100 breast that includes world champion Rebecca Soni, former world record holder Jessica Hardy, and 2000 Olympic champion Megan Jendrick, who gave birth to her first child eight months ago.

On Tuesday night, Brendan Hansen goes for a spot on his third Olympic team in the 100 breaststroke. He flirted with the American record in Monday's semifinals, coming up short with a time of 59.71 seconds ? fourth-fastest in the world this year. The 30-year-old former world champion quit after Beijing but returned to the pool looking to make up for disappointments in the last two Olympics.

"I went out there and hit the first five strokes and I was like, 'I'm gone, later,' and just took off," Hansen said. "You have no idea how hard it is to break a minute."

Eric Shanteau, who competed in Beijing after being diagnosed with testicular cancer, also advanced.

Dana Vollmer, a 2004 Olympian who failed to qualify for the team four years ago, set an American record in the semifinals of the 100 butterfly. The defending world champion put up the world's fastest time this year of 56.42. Natalie Coughlin, an 11-time Olympic medalist, also made the eight-woman final.

Supreme Court Narrows Arizona Immigration Law - The BLT: The ...

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday rejected key provisions in Arizona's tough anti-immigration law, but let stand controversial police checks of immigration status.

In Arizona v. U.S., a 5-3 majority, led by Justice Anthony Kennedy, held that three of four provisions in the law challenged by the Obama Administration were preempted?or blocked?by federal immigration law. Justice Elena Kagan did not participate in the case.

Kennedy said the following three provisions were preempted because they either conflicted with federal law or because Congress has "occupied the field" with federal regulation and "even complementary state regulation" is impermissible:

Section 3 of what has become known as S.B. 1070 created a new state misdemeanor: willful failure to complete or carry an alien registration document.

Section 5(C) also created a misdemeanor penalty for an illegal alien to apply for, solicit or perform work as an employee or independent contractor.

Section 6 authorized a state officer to make a warrantless arrest if the officer has probable cause to believe the person had committed a removable offense.

The majority held that Section 2(B) was not preempted?at least not until there has been experience with its application. Under that section, state officers are to make a "reasonable attempt" to determine the immigration status of any person they stop, detain or arrest on some other legitimate basis if reasonable suspicion exists that the person is unlawfully in the country. Anyone who is arrested also must have his or her immigration status determined before being released.

"There is a basic uncertainty about what the law means and how it will be enforced," wrote Kennedy. "At this stage, without the benefit of a definitive interpretation from the state courts, it would be inappropriate to assume Section 2(B) will be construed in a way that creates a conflict with federal law."

After Kennedy summarized the decision from the bench this morning, Justice Antonin Scalia delivered a lengthy summary of his dissent in which he used as evidence of the majority's error the Obama Administration's recent decision to allow the children of illegal aliens to remain temporarily in this country.

"The President said at a news conference that the new program is `the right thing to do' in light of Congress' failure to pass the Administration's proposed revision of the Immigration act," wrote Scalia. "Perhaps it is, though Arizona may not think so. But, to say, as the Court does, that Arizona contradicts federal law by enforcing applications of the immigration Act that the President declines to enforce boggles the mind."

Weight Management ? How to Maintain Your Current Weight | How ...

For anyone who has ever lost a significant amount of weight, maintaining your weight achievement is very important. Since the process of losing weight can be quite difficult, keeping the lost weight off is just as vital. Whether you reached your weight with the best diet pills or with a healthy diet, in this article I will provide several tips to help you maintain your current physique.

First and foremost, it is very important to upkeep with your fitness regimen. A lot of people who lose weight end up skipping a few fitness sessions or give up their gym membership altogether. That is a very big mistake. It is very easy for a person who has lost a significant amount of weight to gain that weight back. That is why it is crucial to maintain your fitness routine.

Along with fitness, it is also important to maintain your diet.? A lot of people allow themselves occasional snacks once they reach their desired dress size, which is permitted as long as you maintain healthy eating habits otherwise. Nutritional supplements or herbal remedies could be a good solution in helping maintain healthy practices.

If you lost weight without the use of diet pills, it is crucial to keep your nutrition very similar to when you were in the process of losing excess pounds. Another important step towards maintaining your weight loss results is to keep all junk food out of your kitchen. When salty and sugary snacks are out of sight they are less likely to be eaten; when grocery shopping, keep in mind that a healthy diet is an important factor of weight maintenance. A healthy alternative would be an energy drink?instead. So if you want to keep those excess pounds from creeping back on, follow these few steps and remember to weigh yourself regularly.

From CIA asset to solitary cell in Pakistan

There can be few jail cells in Pakistan as lonely as the one occupied by Shakil Afridi, the doctor who helped the CIA hunt down Osama bin Laden.

He is kept in solitary confinement to protect him from hundreds of convicted militants eager to avenge their hero's death. He may not be safe even from the guards ? only two trusted officials are allowed to see him.

Beyond the walls, Afridi is as much a prisoner of Pakistan's growing resentment of the United States as he is a victim of his own dalliance with high-stakes espionage.

No wonder then that he finds solace in the story of Younus in the Quran, almost identical to that of Jonah in the Old Testament, a prophet whose faith in God delivers him from the belly of a whale.

"My brother was confident that he will be released very soon. He said: 'I'm innocent, I've done nothing wrong,'" Afridi's brother Jamil told Reuters in a recent interview after visiting the jail in the northwestern city of Peshawar.

"There is a prayer said by one of the famous prophets, when he was eaten by a fish," Jamil added. "Dr Shakil is reciting that same prayer for his safety."

Pakistan jails doctor who helped CIA find Osama bin Laden

The history of U.S. spycraft has seen few faster reversals of fortune than Afridi's journey from a participant in one of the most dramatic covert operations of modern times to isolation in the forbidding confines of the colonial-era Peshawar Central Jail, with red-brick walls and watch towers.

A small-time country physician long dogged by allegations of medical malpractice, Afridi, now 48, was recruited by the CIA some years ago, according to several U.S. and Pakistani officials. One Pakistani intelligence source said he was talent-spotted while working in a refugee camp on the outskirts of Peshawar in 2009 and used to gather intelligence on militants in the border area.

Later, he was asked to scout bin Laden's compound in the garrison town of Abbottabad, near the capital Islamabad, under the cloak of an anti-hepatitis campaign.

'A victim of the US game'
U.S. officials say Afridi provided important information on activity at the compound. Bin Laden was killed in a U.S. Navy SEAL raid in Abbottabad in May last year that was conducted without informing Pakistani authorities.

Three weeks later, Afridi was picked up, interrogated for months and, in May this year, sentenced to 33 years in jail.

When he was led to a warder's office for the meeting with his brother on June 4, Afridi wore no shackles or handcuffs and was clad in the shalwar-kameez, the loose-fitting trousers and flowing shirt popular in Pakistan.

Jamil Afridi noticed he had gained weight - perhaps because conditions had improved since his transfer to the jail from detention centers used by intelligence agencies.

Jamil, a village schoolteacher, says he himself has been forced to adopt a rudimentary disguise, dark glasses and a cap, to ward off unwanted attention since appearing on TV to defend his younger sibling.

Slideshow: Pakistan: A nation in turmoil (on this page)

"My brother has become a victim of the U.S. game," said Jamil, who spends much of his day worried that passersby are actually security agents tailing him. He used the term "angels" for the agents, as many Pakistanis do because they are believed to be everywhere but remain invisible.

"If my brother had really played a role for America, I think the Americans should have kept it secret."

Afridi meanwhile has become a new irritant in the complex ties between Washington and Islamabad, that have been deteriorating over the past 18 months despite Pakistan's pivotal role to U.S. interests in Afghanistan, counter-terrorism and nuclear security.

Afridi's incarceration fueled suspicions in the Obama administration that elements in Pakistan secretly sympathized with the militants the United States is trying to catch. Pakistan's failure to prosecute a single suspect accused of helping facilitate Bin Laden's stay near a military academy in Abbottabad has only sharpened the rancor.

The day after Afridi was sentenced, the Senate expressed its anger by voting to dock Islamabad $33 million in aid ? $1 million for every year of the term.

Senate panel votes to cut $33M in Pakistan aid over bin Laden doctor's conviction

To Pakistan's powerful military, which was enraged by the bin Laden raid, Afridi is a traitor. Critics in the tribal areas on the Afghan border say he deserves to be punished, not for helping the CIA but for his lack of scruples as a doctor.

Elders and former officials say he made money by performing unnecessary operations on unsuspecting villagers and that he was accused of sexual harassment by nurses.

Jamil Afridi dismisses the allegations as baseless. Some former colleagues have described Afridi as a diligent professional and U.S. officials have also leapt to his defense.

Video: U.S.-Pakistan rift over conviction of doctor (on this page)

"Available information showed Afridi was a respected member of the Pakistani health care community," said a senior U.S. official in Washington. "We are aware of efforts, put in place since Dr. Afridi's arrest, to denigrate his character."

U.S. officials say they offered to relocate Afridi and his family after the bin Laden raid, but that the doctor declined.

There was no way to independently confirm that account.

Jamil Afridi said he did not know whether his brother had received such an offer, but he believed Afridi would have been reluctant to take his two sons and a daughter out of Pakistan, where he had a stable job and his wife was working as the principal of a government college.

Panetta: Only a 'small handful' of top al-Qaida targets left

"He had a good future," Jamil Afridi said. "Why would he move to the U.S. to live there?"

Naseem Bibi, a nurse who worked on his immunization drive in Abbottabad, also defended Afridi. "He was very nice to all the people in the team and did his job very diligently," she said.

Shakil Afridi was born in a modest home in a village in southern Punjab, a vast flatland of wheat, rice and cotton fields that is Pakistan's breadbasket.

Afridi's father had retired to Punjab after serving as a sergeant in the Frontier Corps, a paramilitary unit deployed to protect Pakistan's border with Afghanistan. The family hailed from the Afridi tribe, part of the fiercely independent Pashtun community that straddles the frontier.

His grandfather, Mir Dast, had won the Victoria Cross, Britain's highest military award, in 1915 for valor at Ypres, Belgium, the site of some of the most intense fighting in World War 1.

Although the family was by no means wealthy, Jamil Afridi said his parents were the first in their village to obtain a refrigerator when electricity arrived there in the early 1960s.

Interactive: A timeline of Osama bin Laden's life (on this page)

A dedicated student, Shakil Afridi qualified as a doctor in Peshawar before taking a series of government jobs as a health officer in the rugged land of monumental landscapes and scattered villages hugging the Afghan border.

For years, Afridi was trailed by accusations that he had sought to make easy money by convincing patients to go under his scalpel for unnecessary procedures at his private clinic.

Mohammed Yousaf, an elder from Khyber, said his sister had suffered months of complications and remained bed-ridden after Afridi performed surgery to treat her fever.

"We are illiterate villagers and thought whatever the doctor advised would be good," Yousaf said. "Dr Shakil used to advise surgery to every patient."

Allegations of medical malpractice are not unusual in Pakistan's tribal areas, and it is impossible to verify the validity of the claims.

What is certain is that Afridi rankled his superiors. "Keeping in view his extreme lust for money, I am ashamed to even call him a doctor. He is a corrupt, unreliable and low category officer," wrote the author of a provincial health department report on his performance in March 2002.

In the rough-and-tumble tribal areas, where militants often hold greater sway than the government, the allegations came to the attention of Mangal Bagh, a bus driver-turned warlord who commands an armed group known as Lashkar-e-Islam.

Papers released by the tribal court that sentenced Afridi last month said he had been found guilty of aiding the group, and not for treason for his role in helping the CIA, as Pakistani officials had initially stated.

Lashkar-e-Islam, which does nothing to hide its contempt for Afridi, has denied the court's finding. The group said it would try the doctor itself under Shariah law for working with the CIA to find bin Laden.

Video: Officials demand end to CIA drones in Pakistan (on this page)

Lashkar-e-Islam does, however, acknowledge that its fighters kidnapped Afridi for several days in April 2008 to investigate the allegations of medical malpractice made by locals.

"He was not a surgeon but conducted surgeries and deprived many people of their body organs," said Abdur Rashid Lashkari, spokesman for Lashkar-e-Islam.

Jamil Afridi said his brother had been forced to pay a one million rupee (now about $10,650) ransom to Lashkar-e-Islam to secure his release and rejected the allegations that his brother had performed improper surgeries.

Brother of doctor who worked with CIA in bin Laden hunt seeks US protection

The year after that ordeal, Afridi decided to visit the United States, a vacation that seemed to lodge an admiration for the country in his mind.

In a move that perhaps suggests he was facing some financial strain, Afridi sold his car and a plot of land near Peshawar to fund the trip, his brother said.

He returned with fond memories. "He would tell us that people were so good in the U.S.," Jamil Afridi said.

Afridi was approached by the CIA through an Afghan agent while he was working at the Shamshatoo camp near Peshawar for refugees from Afghanistan in 2009, according to the Pakistani intelligence source, although the claim could not be independently verified.

It seems likely that Afridi would have been a prize catch for CIA agents desperate for an informant who could move freely in the tribal areas, a global hub for militant groups and al-Qaida fighters that is virtually sealed to outsiders.

As the operation to find bin Laden gathered pace, Afridi was set to work organizing an immunization drive in Abbottabad, 95 miles of Peshawar, the site of the compound where U.S. officials suspected he was hiding.

The aim was to obtain DNA samples from children living in bin Laden's compound to prove their father's identity, according to a former Pakistani security official.

Accompanied by three health workers, Afridi went to bin Laden's house and told his wives that an anti-hepatitis drive was underway in the area, the former security official said. He took cheek swabs from the children under the pretext of the campaign.

"A woman went in (to the house) and said 'bring the children out, the doctor is waiting and he will give them the drops'," the former official said. "That's when he used the swabs."

It was unclear whether the CIA used the swabs to determine if the children were bin Laden's. But the doctor did provide intelligence on tight security arrangements at the house.

The raid that killed bin Laden sent shockwaves through Pakistan. The government was at a loss to explain how the al-Qaida chief could have been hiding in Abbottabad, or how U.S. helicopters had managed to slip into the country undetected.

As Pakistani intelligence agents scrambled to decipher what had happened in the months leading up the raid, the net began to close on Afridi.

Pakistan lawmakers to US: Stop drones and apologize for deadly airstrike

Intelligence officers learned that a doctor had visited the bin Laden compound, and got Afridi's name from district medical authorities. On May 23, Afridi was picked up while driving to his home in Peshawar.

A convoy of three double cabin pickup trucks forced his car to a halt and black-clad security agents jumped out and began to rifle through the doctors' identity cards, according to an account of the arrest by his brother.

"This is the one," said one of the security men and Afridi was blindfolded and taken to an anonymous holding cell.

Afridi had seemed oblivious to the dangers of falling into the hands of Pakistan's notorious intelligence services. His brother said Afridi was preparing for the sacred hajj pilgrimage along with his wife and had paid a deposit for the journey.

Instead, he found himself languishing in jail, unable to reach out to the U.S. agents who used him in the closing stages of one of the longest and most expensive manhunts in history.

Afridi's lawyers, who talk strategy in their cramped office in a partly disused building in Peshawar's run-down commercial district, have lodged an appeal against his sentencing.

But there seems little prospect of a quick end to their client's ordeal. Jamil Afridi, who appeared on Pakistani television to defend his brother, says his own eight children now fear for his safety.

"For the first time when they saw me on different TV channels they were crying and telling me: 'We have already lost our uncle,'" he said. "'If we lose you, what will happen to us?'"

Pa. priest case points up conscience vs. obedience

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Mild-mannered Bill Lynn proved a loyal, likable colleague as he climbed the ranks of the powerful Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

A jury on Friday found the meek monsignor too loyal for his own good, convicting him of a felony for refusing to challenge his cardinal and stop the cover-up of child sex abuse by priests.

Lynn's conviction is the first for a U.S. church official and comes in a diocese now beset by layoffs, parish closures and a new round of soul searching over the long-running abuse scandal.

"Why does this stand out? Because he didn't say no," said Chris Walsh, a city pastor who leads the Association of Philadelphia Priests, an independent group formed last year to gather support and information for rank-and-file priests.

Lynn's conviction comes the weekend some Philadelphia parishes are celebrating their final Masses before closing for good and priests are saying goodbye before their traditional June transfers. Meanwhile, the archdiocese is cutting 45 jobs to help close a $17 million deficit, which it calls unrelated to legal bills that hit $10 million this fiscal year, not even counting most of Lynn's trial costs.

Lynn, 61, is spending his first weekend in custody. He faces 3 1/2 to 7 years in prison on the endangerment charge.

His case shines light on the culture of obedience ingrained in Catholics, especially priests. Archdiocesan priests in Philadelphia take vows of obedience to their archbishop, and trial testimony demonstrated that Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua treated a priest whistle-blower more harshly than some priest abusers.

"You don't say no to Cardinal Bevilacqua," Monsignor James Beisel said last month when he testified as a defense witness.

The trial shows the need for renewed debate about the relationship between obedience and conscience, one Catholic academic said.

"The Catholic church hierarchy certainly thinks there's too much discussion in the U.S. about conscience, that people use it to justify any kind of proclivity," said Mathew Schmalz, a religious studies professor at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. "But in this case, there are some really deep issues about when do you stand up to the actions of those superiors."

Lynn, after a stint as a seminary dean, was hand-picked by Bevilacqua for the secretary for clergy's office in 1991. He spent a year as an understudy before becoming secretary in June 1992. He soon learned the job involved more than priest assignments and routine personnel matters.

There also was the matter of the secret church archives containing child sexual abuse complaints lodged over the years against Philadelphia priests. There were hundreds of them, dating to the 1940s. And more than 100 priests, many of them still active, were accused.

Bevilacqua wanted Lynn to spearhead the complaints.

"I never asked for an assignment, and I never asked out of one," Lynn testified.

By his own account, Lynn was an adept bureaucrat. He was organized. He was hardworking. And he was discreet.

Lynn and his assistant, Beisel, set out to gauge the scope of the problem. They took to the task each night for about two weeks, using passcodes to enter the locked room near the golden-domed Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul that housed the secret files. Beisel couldn't stand it. Given the late hour, he just wanted to hurry up and get home, he testified.

Nonetheless, they compiled a 15-page list of names and sex acts, noting whether the priests were diagnosed pedophiles or presumed guilty based on their own admissions. They also noted whether the statute of limitations had run for legal action.

A version of that list became a smoking gun at trial. The list went missing for more than a decade. Lynn told a grand jury about it in 2004 but said he couldn't find it. A copy that had been stashed in a locked, long-abandoned safe surfaced at the archdiocese days after Bevilacqua's death in January. So, too, did a 1994 memo that shows Bevilacqua ordering Lynn's supervisors to shred all copies of the list.

Many institutions try to protect their reputations, but shredding documents takes it to a new level, Schmalz said.

"Shredding documents ? especially with Watergate and all this history we have of institutional malfeasance ? does have a symbolic significance that goes beyond the view of the Catholic church as being closed and insular," he said. "So it is shocking to think what must have gone on leading up to that decision."

The task fell to Monsignor James Molloy, who died in 2006. But Bishop Joseph R. Cistone signed off as witnessing the list's destruction. He now leads the diocese of Saginaw, Mich. Neither he nor retired Allentown Bishop Edward Cullen, Bevilacqua's top aide, was called to testify.

Nor did they come to Lynn's defense. Few, if any, church officials have stepped forward to share in the blame for the sex abuse scandal, even though District Attorney Seth Williams said Friday that many have "dirty hands."

Walsh said: "The cardinal could have done that a year ago, two years ago, and obviously Bishop Cullen and Bishop Cistone could still do it."

Beisel, overwhelmed by the clergy office job, quit after a year. Lynn stayed for more than a decade. But he was the rare aide to Bevilacqua who was never made a bishop.

By 2004, Bevilacqua had retired, the clergy sexual abuse scandal had erupted in Boston, and a grand jury investigation was under way in Philadelphia. U.S. bishops had adopted a zero tolerance policy for accused priests. And new diocesan panels were being formed to handle abuse complaints, with varying degrees of success.

It was time for Lynn to move on. Submissive to the end, he said he declined to request his next assignment. Instead, he accepted a desirable posting as pastor of a large, upscale parish in suburban Downingtown. He was put on leave after his arrest last year. Loyal parishioners from the parish, St. Joseph's, sometimes attended his trial.

A spokesman for Voice of the Faithful, a Boston-based group formed in the wake of the abuse crisis to try to empower lay Catholics, said it was "obvious that here's this one man sitting (on trial) when there should be scores of people sitting there."

"The moral call to stand when you're guilty and confess seems to have been abrogated by those in power. It was, 'I'm just following orders,'" Voice of the Faithful spokesman Nick Ingala said. "The organization that claims to be the moral authority in the world has given up that moral authority."
