Worst Movie Hair: Awful 'Dos, From 'Tootsie' To 'Napoleon Dynamite'

Back in December, the first trailer for "Rock of Ages" hit the Web. It was (unsurprisingly) chock-full of '80s power ballads, romantic subplots and, according to Catherine Zeta-Jones' character, "sex, hateful music and sex." Then there was the hair: the epic, wig-heavy hair, worn by some of Hollywood's most famous faces (Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin).

It shouldn't come as a shock that a film taking place in 1987 features characters who are hair-sprayed into oblivion. Thankfully, they (sort of) have an excuse: It was the '80s!

Unfortunately, there are plenty of other 'dos in movie history that can't use the cheesy decade defense. From Javier Bardem in "No Country For Old Men" to Jim Carrey in "Ace Ventura," these characters taught viewers what not to do when selecting a hairstyle.

So, in honor of every wig in "Rock of Ages," let's celebrate some of the worst hairdos ever caught on film.

  Throughout Harry and Sally's strung-out romance, Meg Ryan went through a lot of hairstyles. However, none were more memorable than this one.

• Rhea Perlman, 'Matilda'

  Those familiar with Rhea Perlman know that the actress does not shy away from her frizzy curls. But in 1996's "Matilda," Perlman manages to outdo herself with her fried, blond locks.

• John Travolta, 'Battlefield Earth'

  "Battlefield Earth" is widely considered to be one of the worst movies ever made. Unfortunately, the dreads on John Travolta's character, Terl, didn't help the matter.

• Johnny Depp, 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'

  Tim Burton's 2005 revamp featured many changes from the original, but none more obvious than the updated Willy Wonka, played by Johnny Depp. Instead of Gene Wilder's frizzy mop, Depp donned a sleek and shiny bob under his top hat.

  In the 2011 comedy, Colin Farrell takes on the atypical role of a shallow manager with one incredible comb-over -- a 'do even this Irish stud couldn't make work.

• Will Ferrell, 'Zoolander'

  In a world where walk-offs, voguing and fashion reigns supreme, Mugatu's (played by Will Ferrell) poodled hair outshines even Derek Zoolander himself.

• Jim Carrey, 'Ace Ventura: Pet Detective'

  From pompadours to oddly horned hairdos, Jim Carrey earns a second spot on the bad hair list for his role as the eccentric pet investigator.

• Ted Danson, 'Getting Even With Dad'

  The father-son comedy saw Ted Danson's most embarrassing on-screen hairstyle to date: a ponytail that "Beauty and the Beast's" Gaston would be envious of. (Macaulay Culkin's going through his own hair experimentation in this movie, too.) 1994! What a kooky year!

• Chris Tucker, 'The Fifth Element'

  The depiction of the future is generally a little bizarre in Luc Besson's 1997 sci-fi flick. However, when it comes to eccentric hairstyles, motor-mouth Ruby Rod (Chris Tucker) takes the cake with his paint roller-style 'do.

• Jon Heder, 'Napoleon Dynamite'

  There's no one who knows how to rock an unhip style more than Napoleon Dynamite. The cult comedy brought about the "Vote For Pedro" craze and made cherubic blond curls (almost) cool.

• Mike Myers, 'Austin Powers'

  While Austin Power's sex appeal was a rather acquired taste, no one can deny him the title of most luxurious chest hair of any secret agent ever.

• Emma Stone, 'The Help'

  "The Help" was a favorite at last year's award shows. But, in addition to Emma Stone's moving performance as Skeeter Phelan, we can't ignore that curly mop, which is remarkable in its own right.

• Dustin Hoffman, 'Tootsie'

  Before there was Mrs. Doubtfire, there was Tootsie. In 1982, Dustin Hoffman masqueraded as a female actress in order to snag a role on a daytime soap. Somehow -- despite the positively phony wig -- the plan worked...kinda.

• Leonardo DiCaprio, 'The Man In The Iron Mask'

  The 1998 film imagines heartthrob Leonardo DiCaprio in a slightly different role. Here, with long, dirty blond locks, he's transformed into the unpopular Sun King who's bankrupting France and sparking riotous mobs. (You know how it goes with bad hair: all for one and one for all!)

• Amanda Seyfried, 'In Time'

  Last year's dystopian-thriller brought about Justin Timberlake's first turn as an action star <em>and</em> Amanda Seyfried's terrible, red wig.
