Lack of iron regulating protein contributes to high blood pressure of the lungs

Feb. 17, 2013 ? A protein known to regulate iron levels in the body has an unexpectedly important role in preventing a form of high blood pressure that affects the lungs, and in stabilizing the concentration of red cells in blood, according to a study in mice by researchers at the National Institutes of Health.

In mice, lack of iron regulatory protein 1 (Irp1) results in pulmonary hypertension, a form of high blood pressure that affects the lungs, and to polycythemia, a rare disorder in which the body produces excess red blood cells.

"This insight might lead to progress in treating cases of polycythemia or pulmonary hypertension without a known cause," said senior author Tracey A. Rouault, M.D., of the Division of Intramural Research (DIR) at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), where the research was conducted. It's possible, she added, that human cases of these disorders might result from malfunctioning copies of the gene for Irp1.

The study also provides insight into how the body directs iron into the manufacture of blood to prevent anemia, the deficiency of red blood cells.

The findings appear in Cell Metabolism.

Dr. Rouault collaborated with more than a dozen other NIH researchers, including first authors Manik C. Ghosh, Ph.D., and Deliang Zhang, Ph.D., also of the NICHD's DIR, as well as researchers at the NIH Veterinary Resources Program and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Researchers from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Denver, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln were also part of the team.

Iron regulatory protein 1 (Irp1) detects iron levels in cells and directs either the storage or use of iron, depending on other conditions in the body. The researchers found that mice lacking Irp1 produced high levels of hypoxia inducible factor 2-alpha (HIF2 alpha), a protein produced in response to low oxygen conditions, like those that occur at high altitudes. In turn, HIF2 alpha spurs production of the hormone erythropoietin, which stimulates the production of red blood cells.

When the animals were put on low-iron diets, they did not become anemic, but instead developed polycythemia and pulmonary hypertension.

In people, polycythemia and high blood pressure in the lungs are rare conditions, and in some cases occur without a known cause. It is possible that changes in the gene for Irp1 may account for some of these cases, the researchers suggest.

To investigate Irp1's role in regulating the body's use of iron, the researchers reared mice lacking the gene that makes Irp1 and divided the animals into two groups, feeding one group a normal diet and the other a low iron diet.

Within a year, less than 40 percent of the mice on the low-iron diet had survived. Most had died from abdominal hemorrhaging. The researchers found that the mice on low iron diets had high levels of HIF2 alpha in the lungs and kidney. These animals produced high levels of erythropoietin, which resulted in polycythemia. HIF2 alpha also triggered increased production of a substance known as endothelin-1 in the lungs, which likely contributed to the development of pulmonary hypertension.

"Irp1 appears to be the switch that controls whether HIF2 alpha protein is made," Dr. Zhang said.

This research also provided insight into how Irp1 functions under normal circumstances Dr. Rouault explained. The researchers theorize that in low-iron conditions, Irp1 allows the production of HIF2 alpha. HIF2 alpha then triggers production of erythropoietin, to generate more red blood cells. To supply iron for the red blood cells, iron is removed from the tissues. When tissue iron levels decline too much, Irp1 halts production of HIF2 alpha, and production of new blood cells ceases, conserving the body's remaining iron stores. Production of red blood cells then declines, leading to anemia.

Afghanistan's Fate Unclear As More Troops Expected To Leave

As President Obama continues to reduce the U.S. troop presence in Afghanistan, some Afghans say they are going to need his help now more than ever. Human rights activists are worried that the government in Afghanistan may be too weak to deal with dramatic changes expected in the next year: the drawdown of U.S. troops, efforts to negotiate peace with the Taliban and elections.

SCOTT SIMON, HOST:

President Obama drew lots of applause at his State of the Union address when he spoke about withdrawing U.S. troops from Afghanistan. But Afghans themselves are decidedly more ambivalent about the U.S. departure. Their country was plunged into a brutal civil war after Soviet troops withdrew in the 1980s, and some Afghans are now looking to the U.S. to try to keep the country from descending into lawlessness and civil war after U.S. troops depart. NPR's Michele Kelemen sat down this week with several human rights activists from Afghanistan to hear their concerns.

MICHELE KELEMEN, BYLINE: A woman's rights activist, Nargis Nehan, says this is shaping up to be a big year for her country: 34,000 U.S. troops are pulling out, the Taliban has an office in Qatar in preparation for peace talks and Afghanistan is to hold elections in 2014.

NARGIS NEHAN: We have to have political settlement because end of every fight is a peace. So, we have to move towards that. Military withdrawal should happen because we have to take more responsibility of managing our own affairs ourselves.

KELEMEN: Nehan is just not convinced Afghanistan can pull all of this off.

NEHAN: What actually we fear a little bit is giving all these three major challenges at the same time to Afghan people to manage them with all these weak institutions that we have, with the trust deficit that we have, with weak leadership that we have.

KELEMEN: Nehan runs a nonprofit in Kabul called Equality for Peace and Democracy. She came to Washington with other activists to meet officials at the State Department, Pentagon, White House and Congress to urge them to stay involved even after U.S. troops leave. Musarat Hussein, who works with a German Green political party foundation, says he's hopeful the U.S. can help protect some of the accomplishments Afghans have made and institutionalize reforms.

MUSARAT HUSSEIN: There should not be one-man show. Now, I think that most of the issues were manipulated by President Karzai and his team.

KELEMEN: These activists are looking beyond Hamid Karzai's role, which is set to end after next year's election. Masood Karokhail, who runs a nonprofit that works on governance issues, says the U.S. and Europe need to help Afghanistan get through that vote.

MASOOD KAROKHAIL: This is a very key milestone for our people because usually power transfers in our country have been very bloody, either to coups or through civil war or foreign invasion. And this goes even back to the 1800s.

KELEMEN: To change that course in history, he says, Afghans need outside support, and it's not just about security. Karokhail says Afghanistan need economic support and civil society groups need help to hold their government to account.

KAROKHAIL: We were given very high expectations to begin with of solidarity and support to Afghanistan in the long run. And it is suddenly a very quick change in that tone. I think it does have a big impact.

KELEMEN: President Obama says while he expects the war to be over in 2014, the U.S. will remain committed, he says, to a unified and sovereign Afghanistan.

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: But the nature of our commitment will change. We're negotiating an agreement with the Afghan government that focuses on two missions: training and equipping Afghan forces so that the country does not again slip into chaos, and counterterrorism efforts that allow us to pursue the remnants of al-Qaida and their affiliates.

KELEMEN: While the president didn't mention democracy or women's rights when he spoke about Afghanistan in the State of the Union, Masood Karokhail argues it is in U.S. national security interest to make sure his country succeeds. That's especially true, he says, at this time of turmoil throughout the Arab and Muslim world.

KAROKHAIL: Failure in Afghanistan will sort of resonate through all of this, that such a large investment of NATO, I would say, or international community in the nation, led again to civil war or our people were not able to fulfill their hopes and dreams. I think it has a direct relationship to the U.S. national security and also other Western capitals. So, therefore I think it's a very mutually bond relationship that we have.

KELEMEN: He and his colleagues have high expectations of Secretary of State John Kerry, who as senator often played the part of troubleshooter on Afghanistan for the Obama administration. Michele Kelemen, NPR News, Washington.

(AP) ? Reeva Steenkamp's last wish for her family before she was shot dead at boyfriend Oscar Pistorius' home was for them to watch her in a reality TV show that went on air in South Africa on Saturday night, two days after her killing.

Sharon Steenkamp, Reeva's cousin, told The Associated Press that the model and law graduate was "proud of being in the show" and reminded them in their last conversation to make sure that they watched it.

The South African Broadcasting Corp. aired the "Tropika Island of Treasure" program, showing the late Steenkamp ? the victim of a Valentine's Day shooting at the home of Pistorius, the Olympic star and double-amputee athlete. She is laughing and smiling, and blowing a kiss toward the camera in Jamaica when it was filmed last year.

South Africans also saw her swimming in the ocean and watching people jump off a cliff and into the sea, shaking her head as they leaped.

SABC said it was dedicated to Steenkamp and displayed the words "Reeva Steenkamp 19 August 1983 - 14 February 2013" between images of a rose and a candle in a short tribute before the show aired. She was also seen blowing the kiss as she sat on a Jamaican beach and her name again appeared on screen with the years of her birth and death.

The country was rocked Thursday when news broke of Steenkamp's shooting death at the upscale house of the star athlete. Pistorius was arrested and charged with her murder and remains in custody in a police station. His family has strongly denied prosecutors' claims that he murdered her.

Steenkamp's family said earlier Saturday that it had not been contacted by either the SABC ? South Africa's national broadcaster ? or the show's producers for permission to air it, but were not opposed to it because Reeva wanted everyone to see it.

"Her last words to us personally were that she wants us to watch it," Sharon Steenkamp said, hours before the program was shown.

SABC aired the reality show on its main channel, which prominently featured Steenkamp.

The show's executive producer, Samantha Moon, said going ahead with the show "is what she would have wanted."

Steenkamp, a 29-year-old blonde model who graduated from law school, died after suffering four gunshot wounds, police said. Officers recovered a 9-mm pistol from Pistorius' house and quickly charged the Olympian with murder over Steenkamp's killing.

Pistorius will appear in court Tuesday for a bail hearing, something police have said they oppose. Prosecutors also say they will pursue upgraded charges of premeditated murder against him, which means the disabled icon and double-amputee runner could face a life sentence.

Steenkamp was known in South Africa for appearing in commercials and as a bikini-clad model in men's magazines.

Pistorius and Steenkamp met Nov. 4 at the Kyalami race track, which sits between Pretoria and Johannesburg and has been used for Grand Prix and Formula 1 races, said Justin Divaris, a mutual friend.

Divaris said his own girlfriend was a close friend to Steenkamp. Pistorius and Steenkamp immediately hit it off and decided in the spur of the moment to attend a sports award ceremony together the same night, Divaris said. At the time, Pistorius had been dating another woman and his personal life was constant fodder for gossip pages.

Later, however, problems may have started, as police have said there were previous domestic altercations at Pretorius' home in a gated community near South Africa's capital, Pretoria.

A Steenkamp family spokesman said late Friday that relatives still faced a long struggle to come to terms with her killing.

"I can't see the family getting over this shortly," said Reeva's uncle, Mike Steenkamp. "It's going to be a long, long-term reconciliation with a lot of things and issues."

Family members plan for a memorial service Tuesday for the model in Port Elizabeth, her hometown on South Africa's southern coast. Pistorius has a court appearance scheduled in Pretoria on the same day for his lawyers to argue that he can be released on bail.

Portions released earlier Saturday of the reality show, sponsored by a milk fruit drink, feature Steenkamp laughing and smiling on the beaches of Jamaica. Another portion shows her swimming with two dolphins, which tap her on the cheek with their snouts.

"I think the way that you go out, not just your journey in life, but the way that you go out and the way you make your exit is so important," Steenkamp says in the video. "You either made an impact in a positive or a negative way, but just maintain integrity and maintain class and just remain true to yourself.

"I'm going to miss you all so much and I love you very, very much."

Police: 7 foreigners kidnapped in north Nigeria

BAUCHI, Nigeria (AP) ? Gunmen attacked a camp for a construction company in rural northern Nigeria, killing a guard and kidnapping seven foreign workers from Britain, Greece, Italy Lebanon and the Philippines, authorities said Sunday, in the biggest kidnapping yet in a region under attack by Islamic extremists.

The attack Saturday night happened in Jama'are, a town in a rural portion of Bauchi state. There, the gunmen first attacked a local prison, burning two police trucks, Bauchi state police spokesman Hassan Muhammed told The Associated Press.

The gunmen then targeted a worker's camp for Lebanese construction company Setraco, which is in the area building a road, Muhammed said. The gunmen shot dead a guard at the camp before kidnapping the foreign workers, the spokesman said.

"The gunmen came with explosives, which they used to break some areas," Muhammed said. He did not elaborate and an AP journalist could not immediately reach the town, which is about 200 kilometers (125 miles) north of the state capital, Bauchi.

One British citizen, one Greek, one Italian, three Lebanese and one Filipino were kidnapped, said Adamu Aliyu, the chairman of the local government area that encompasses Jama'are. He said one of the hostages was a woman, while the rest were men. He initially had said four of the hostages were Lebanese and blamed the confusion on incorrect information he received from his staff.

Italian news agency ANSA later said authorities confirmed an Italian had been kidnapped in the attack. It quoted Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi saying the safety of the hostage must be given "absolute priority."

Greece confirmed one of their citizens was abducted. A statement from Greece's Foreign Ministry said authorities had a plane on standby to send investigators to Nigeria and that its foreign minister had been in contact with Terzi.

"Two Greek police officers, liaisons in Greece's Nigerian Embassy, are in contact with their colleagues of the countries involved and the Nigerian authorities," the statement said.

Britain's Foreign Office said Sunday it was looking into the kidnappings.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the abductions, though Nigeria's predominantly Muslim north has been under attack by the radical Islamic sect known as Boko Haram in the last year and a half. The country's weak central government has been unable to stop the group's bloody guerrilla campaign of shootings and bombings. The sect is blamed for killing at least 792 people in 2012 alone, according to an AP count.

Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the Hausa language of Nigeria's north, has demanded the release of all its captive members and called for strict Shariah law to be implemented across the entire country. The sect has killed both Christians and Muslims in their attacks, as well as soldiers and security forces.

The group, which speaks to journalists in telephone conference calls at times of its choosing, could not be immediately reached for comment Sunday.

Foreigners, long abducted by militant groups and criminal gangs for ransom in Nigeria's oil-rich southern delta, have become increasingly targeted in Nigeria's north as the violence has grown. However, abductions of foreigners in the north have seen hostages regularly killed.

In May, gunmen in Kaduna state shot and killed a Lebanese and a Nigerian construction worker, while kidnapping another Lebanese employee. Later that month, kidnappers shot a German hostage dead during a rescue operation.

Gunmen who authorities say have links to Boko Haram also kidnapped an Italian and a British man last year in northern Kebbi State who were later killed during a rescue operation by Nigerian soldiers backed up by British special forces. The sect later denied taking part in that abduction, which left Italian authorities angry that the nation was not consulted before the failed rescue attempt.

In December, more than 30 attackers stormed a house in the northern Nigeria state of Kaduna, killing two people and kidnapping a French engineer working on a renewable energy project there.

Chinese construction workers also have been killed by gunmen around Maiduguri, the northeastern city in Nigeria where Boko Haram first began.

In the most recent attack, assailants attacked North Korean doctors working for a hospital in Yobe state, stabbing two to death and beheading a third. No group claimed responsibility for that attack.

Foreign embassies in Nigeria have issued travel warnings regarding northern Nigeria for months. Worries about abductions have increased in recent weeks with the French military intervention in Mali, as its troops and Malian soldiers try to root out Islamic fighters who took over that nation's north in the months following a military coup. Last week, the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria's capital, Abuja, put out a warning following the killings of polio workers in the northern city of Kano and the killing of the North Korean doctors.

"The security situation in some parts of Nigeria remains fluid and unpredictable," the embassy said.

Blatter: Most Europol cases were already handled

By AHMED MOHAMED

Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:16 p.m. ET Feb. 7, 2013

NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania (AP) - Most allegations of match-fixing raised by Europol this week had already been dealt with, FIFA President Sepp Blatter said Thursday.

"Most of the matches which they put in this tray, 600 or 800, have already been analyzed, dealt with and even were at court," Blatter said.

At Europol's briefing in the Netherlands on Monday, the police liaison agency said it knew of 380 suspicious matches played in Europe in recent years and 300 more worldwide, including national team matches under FIFA's jurisdiction.

Europol did not identify matches it suspected were corrupted, fuelling widespread speculation about which teams were involved and if new allegations had been uncovered.

Blatter acknowledged that match-fixing for illegal betting scams was "pure delinquency," which presented a serious danger to the sport.

"We're fighting against that," Blatter said in French. "Because if the matches are fixed, there's no more interest in going to watch football."

Blatter also said countries should change their laws to help soccer prosecute match-fixing cases.

He spoke a day after FIFA launched a website for whistleblowers to report suspicions of fixing and corruption among its 209 member nations.

The FIFA leader visited Mauritania on a tour of African countries before attending the Cup of Nations final Sunday in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Online Radio Service TuneIn Launches Its Redesigned Web Presence

TuneIn_logoTuneIn is a massively popular online radio service with over 40 million monthly active listeners according to its own data. The reason for its success is mostly due to its popular mobile apps and not necessarily because of its cool website. Until today, TuneIn's web presence was functional but looked somewhat outdated. Now, however, the service has given itself a complete web makeover. The old text-heavy design that put the emphasis on station names has been replaced with large album cover-like images that indicate what's currently playing on a given station. The experience, TuneIn tells us, is meant to "replicate the experience people used to have in a record store."

Christian fashion show to be held in Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- The organizers of Christian Fashion Week have a message: modest does not equal frumpy.

"A lot of the designers we talked with looked at the challenge as a creative challenge," said Jose Gomez, who, along with his wife and another couple, is organizing the event. "How do we push the boundaries ? with boundaries?"

The couple's first-ever Christian Fashion Week begins Friday with a VIP reception and then a runway show on Saturday in Tampa. They've pegging the dates to the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York and hopes that the two-day event ? it's not really a week-long show ? will evolve into something bigger over time.

"We want to do something to make New York jealous," Jose Gomez said.

The runway shows will be slightly different than a typical fashion event. Backstage, there will be separate changing areas for male and female models so people can "preserve their dignity," he said. The swimwear show will take place first, and during that show, the audience will be women only, he said, to avoid any "awkward" feelings for audience members.

"We are trying to be sensitive to the fact that our audience may be in different places about how they feel about it," he said.

During intermission, Shari Braendel, the author of "Good Girls Don't Have to Dress Bad" and a fashion blogger, will speak. Bibles and other Christian-themed items will be placed into the gift bags.

The nine designers selected for the runway event will showcase original women's couture, women's ready-to-wear fashion, men's clothing, swimwear and bridal gowns. Several of the designers are Florida-based, while two are from New York and one is from Venezuela. Not all of the designers are Christian, but all showed an interest in designing modern, beautiful and modest clothes.

"We really wanted quality represented," said Jose Gomez. His wife, Mayra, was working on the day that her husband did an interview with The Associated Press, but she has modeled and runs Models4Jesus, which hosts events for and by fashion industry professionals who happen to be Christian. Among her messages: Models shouldn't have to pose nude if they don't want to.

Julia Chew at 18 is the youngest designer of the group. She was drawn to the show in part because of her faith ? yet in designing the collection for the show, she didn't have to "remind" herself to create modest clothing because those are her values.

"I'm a teenager, and I want to be accepted," she said. "As a Christian, I want to dress and design clothes in a way that honors my body."

Chew, who recently graduated after being homeschooled by her parents, said her collection was inspired by nature ? she enjoys camping trips with her family ? and her gauzy, chiffon dresses were inspired by waterfalls. She's also been "obsessed" with feathers recently and crafted a stunning above-the-knee length dress entirely of dyed black feathers.

Crew sells her creations on Etsy, a website where designers, crafters and creators can sell their homemade items.

Alma Vidovic, also of Tampa, is another of the designers. She spends her days as a stylist at the Home Shopping Network, and in her free time designs clothing. Her first-ever bridal line will be shown at the Christian fashion show Saturday; the dresses are subtle and sexy, with one strapless ivory-colored dress that hugs the body and flows into cascading ruffles at the hem.

"I see my fashion as a story," she said. "I wanted to create a kind of floral story, a blooming, a coming of age."

Both Vidovic and Chew say that dressing creatively doesn't automatically translate into showing skin.

"It's about comfort and really expressing who you are," Vidovic said.

Gomez said that people in the Christian press have taken notice and some publications ? such as Christianity Today ? are expected to send reporters and photographers to the show.

Already, Jose Gomez said, he's had calls from sponsors for next year's show, and is thinking ahead about hosting it in a bigger location, like Miami or even New York.

"Modesty is the right thing to do," he said. "The fashion industry operates under certain assumptions, but there is an alternative."

Top 4 Dog Diet Misconceptions

On February 6, 2013, in Pet Tips, by Cameron

1. Dogs shouldn?t eat human food. This belief is true to a degree, but it is not an absolute, ironclad rule. Examples of human foods that are dangerous or deadly for pets to consume include chocolate, grapes, raisins, caffeine, and alcohol. These should be avoided 100% of the time.

On the other hand, some common staples of the human diet can also supplement a canine?s meals. Fresh fruit and vegetables are vibrant and nutritious ? particularly apples, bananas, carrots, and spinach.

2. Digestive issues arise if a dog?s diet changes often. This may be the case in the short term, but only because dogs? stomachs become so accustomed to the same dog food every day, that anything new is a shock to their system. Incorporating a more diverse and well-balanced diet into your dog?s life will make it healthier as well as more resistant to an upset stomach.

People would get bored if they literally ate the same thing every day for years. There?s no reason not to make your pet?s diet more interesting so long as it is sensible, affordable and nutritious. You can incorporate cooked meat like chicken, lamb and pork into their dog food ? as well as fruits or veggies ? to strengthen their stomach and provide them with rich nutrients.

3. If you do choose to feed your dog human food, they will start to beg a lot more. This behavior does not depend on what you feed them but rather how you handle them when you and your family are eating. Do your best to deter begging by having them in another room when you dine or to train them from an early age that begging is not okay. Make sure to always feed your dog out of its bowl and not from the dinner table ? that will help establish boundaries.

4. Foods other than dog food will negatively affect their weight. This assumption is a misconception because one?s dog could just as easily become overweight on a diet of purely dog food. Moderation and balance is crucial on a daily basis. Pet owners have the responsibility to provide a mix of foods that are healthy and enjoyable. A fusion of dog food and human food (cooked meat, fruits, and vegetables) can accomplish this goal. Regular exercise is equally important to maintain a reasonable weight for one?s pooch.

'Secret ledger' at heart of Spanish corruption scandal given to authorities

Although the ledger implicates Prime Minister Rajoy and other leaders in a payment scheme, Spain's government looks like it will hold on ? at least for a while.

By Andr?s Cala,?Correspondent / February 5, 2013

Demonstrators shout slogans outside the headquarters of the ruling People's Party in Madrid Tuesday. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Saturday denied wrongdoing in a growing corruption scandal that threatens his credibility just as he makes headway against the economic crisis. The banners read, 'Over-corruption, PP, resignation!' and 'Resignation!'

Spanish authorities are stepping up their investigation into a high-level corruption scandal that is shaking the government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy ? and threatening Europe?s already fragile credibility that it will be able to drag itself out of years of economic and political crisis.

Today Spain?s biggest daily, El Pa?s, which disclosed the scandal, handed authorities perhaps the most damaging evidence threatening Spain?s government and Mr. Rajoy. It?s a 14-page handwritten ledger allegedly tracking how some 7.5 million euros ($10.1 million) in donations, mostly from builders, were funneled for almost two decades to leaders of the now governing Popular Party (PP), including Rajoy.

El Pa?s has not disclosed who the whistleblower is or how its source came into possession of what the paper has described as a secret accounting book kept by former PP Treasurer Luis B?rcenas.

Today Mr. B?rcenas, who is currently being investigated separately for corruption in Spanish courts, once again denied he kept a secret accounting book. ?This notebook doesn?t exist, nor has it ever existed. That is not my handwriting,? he said Tuesday during a short interview with a minor TV channel.

Denials and recriminations

El Pa?s has published excerpts of the book showing the names of Rajoy and most high-ranking PP leaders, including former ministers, members of Parliament, and perhaps former Prime Minister Jos? Mar?a Aznar.

Rajoy and the government vehemently deny the accusations and have promised full disclosure. They insist the information is part of a conspiracy to destabilize Spain ? the EU's fourth largest economy ? and to undermine policies meant to pull the country out of its worst crisis in decades.

But legal and public pressure on the PP is mounting, and fast. The anticorruption unit of the attorney general's office is combing through PP tax returns since 2000 and trying to confirm the authenticity of the parallel accounting book that El Pa?s delivered. Markets and global governments are jittery that the scandal could force new elections, even if that remains unlikely for now.

Over the weekend, after an extraordinary meeting of the PP?s barons, Rajoy said that everything that has been published about the ledger is a lie. He said he would publish his tax returns to prove he never received some 25,000 euros ($34,000) annually for 11 years, as the alleged accounting book suggests. He refused to answer questions from the media, though.

On Monday he offered another denial during a press conference in Berlin with Chancellor Angela Merkel. ?It?s a difficult moment but we will overcome it because the allegations are absolutely false,? Rajoy said.

?Everything that involves me and my party colleague is a lie. Except for some things that some media has already published,? he added, referring to former and active officials and non-government organizations that have confirmed some of the payments and the existence of the secret accounting.

Infighting in the PP

Perhaps most damaging, at least in public opinion, is the public admission by Jorge Tr?as, a former PP member of Parliament and reportedly a close friend of B?rcenas, that he saw the secret accounting book. Mr. Tr?as says that the PP's and government's denials of the ledger are more damaging than the ledger's contents ? and are exposing growing infighting within the ruling party.

B?rcenas also suggested Tuesday that enemies of Rajoy from within his party are behind a complex effort to hurt Rajoy. ?Someone with access to the accounting could be behind this montage,? he said.

Their intention, B?rcenas argues, is to ?topple? Rajoy and his government, to exacerbate internal divisions between hardliners in the conservative party and Rajoy?s more centrist government. He only identified them as ?those who have no other way to rise to power.?

The rift in the PP is as political as it is ideological. Hardliners want the PP to stick more to its inflexible anti-abortion, pro-church, and pro-centralization pillars, while the Rajoy centrists are more pragmatic, especially as their top priorities are economic, not political.

But it's also a question of political egos. Rajoy had to overcome stiff opposition within the party to be named its leader, eventually imposing his authority on hardliners who tried to challenge him.

It's unlikely, however, that the PP would be willing to shoot itself in the foot in the way that B?rcenas is suggesting. Many analysts and columnists say that he is just trying to cover his own tracks. In fact, hardliners within the PP are publicly pressuring Rajoy to take legal action against B?rcenas ? pressure that Rajoy has so far resisted.

Rajoy and Spain safe for now

The anticorruption unit has summoned B?rcenas and Tr?as to testify tomorrow as part of its preliminary investigation. But it?s unlikely that Rajoy could be legally implicated, even if the authenticity of the book is confirmed.

?While the scandal will likely generate significant noise, the risk of government instability in the short-term is still low,? said Antonio Barroso, an analyst with political risk bellwether Eurasia Group, in a research note.

Most major parties have now called for Rajoy's resignation and early elections, if not for his alleged involvement, for the damage that Spain will endure if the scandal drags on. In any case, a no-confidence vote in Parliament is also unlikely because the PP holds an absolute majority.

But public opinion and internal political pressure from within the PP could change that. ?Rajoy could be forced to resign if senior party leaders launch an internal coup, but this seems unlikely at this stage,? Mr. Barroso wrote.

The scandal no doubt will dominate Spain?s political scene for months, especially as courts and the attorney general?s office investigate. There are also other unrelated corruption cases involving PP officials making their way through courts.

?If markets start punishing Spain and the government is forced to apply for a bailout, Rajoy could come under increased pressure to step down and appoint someone that could manage the new situation,? Barroso said. ?Critical statements from important party members such as regional PP leaders or senior government figures should be regarded as a signal that the situation was worsening.?

Video games retail in 2023 | Games industry news | MCV

Believe the doom mongers and you'll believe that games retail won't exist in ten years time. We think it will, just in a radically different form.

?

Traditional video games retail is dying.

If you want the proof then simply look at the nightmare that has engulfed HMV and Blockbuster over the past four weeks. Music downloading and movie streaming is growing at such a pace that the idea of buying a disc has become old-fashioned. It?s no wonder these iconic chains are in such turmoil. We don't need them.

And the video games sector is following this trend. More games are being made and sold digitally. The days of the local video game shop is coming to an end. It's inevitable.

Or is it? After speaking to HMV and GAME this week, I can?t help but feel that not only does physical video games retail have a future, but an important role to play in definining it, too.

?The industry is constantly evolving ? that?s the nature of any technology-based industry,? explains GAME CEO Martyn Gibbs (pictured far left), who returned to lead the company following its administration in April last year.

? ?We?ve seen fundamental changes to the industry with the release of the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii ? these brought new customer demographics to the market and were changes that were easy for retailers to take advantage of as they sat within the established retail model.

"The current changes require a very different approach. The proliferation of a multitude of new devices, more versatile platforms and many new ways to game and to access games is changing the fabric of the gaming industry. It?s a very exciting time.

"In the middle of those changes, one thing remains constant ? wherever there is gaming, there will be gaming communities.?

Although it is fun to compare video games to its sister industries music and movies, it?s not always wise to do so.

- Dominic Mulroy, HMV

?

Video games is a far more complex sector. The sheer number of devices, business models, digital options, and control types ? motion, touch screen and otherwise ? make video games confusing for even your average core gamer, let alone your Asda mum.

And then there?s the challenge around marketing games. A trailer on TV can accurately convey what you might expect from your Skyfall DVD, while a song on the radio will give you a good idea what to expect from the new Biffy Clyro album. But to fully understand how good Dead Space 3 is going to be, consumers need to be able to go hands on and experience the product.

And that?s where shops come in.

?Games retail cannot hope to recapture the loyalty of consumers by competing on price, convenience or relationship alone. They need to reimagine themselves to become destination spots,? says HMV?s Dominic Mulroy, who joined the retailer after selling it his Gamerbase business. Gamerbase remains one of HMV?s most profitable businesses, something HMV?s new owner Hilco will no doubt be aware of.

?While parents are educated by brand ambassadors, their kids are encouraged to assemble by providing entertainment and the opportunity to compete and have fun. The games stores of the future will need to become edutainment stores."

Mulroy adds that these new games retailers ?will rely heavily on supplier investment by creating showcases.? He says: ?This will instigate a shift of the business model, where retail becomes less reliant on consumer spend, and more so from the trade and experiential marketing budgets.

?The games industry will have to change its relationship with retailers?too, or risk losing the battle on the frontline. A consumer will not be deciding between just an Xbox 720 or PlayStation 4, they will be comparing the cost of those consoles with that of the latest Apple or Samsung mobile or tablet, or a new Smart Television.

"The games industry cannot lose the ability to demonstrate new technology and brands to the consumer at retail level.?

It?s something that Gibbs and the team at GAME appears to have recognised, too.

?We have centred our strategy on building the UK?s most valuable community of gamers,? the game boss told us.

?We have over 12 million reward card holders ? third only to Tesco and Boots ? a growing social media following and stores that are becoming the hub of their local gaming community.

"In terms of our physical stores, our teams have driven a really pleasing overall performance and they continue to innovate - we?ve launched community events like in-stores lock-ins and we?ve secured some of the best exclusive content available.?

?

- Martyn Gibbs, GAME

?

Just imagine a video games store filled with devices ? consoles, tablets, TVs and mobies. Each device has a game on it that customers can play and ? should they like it ? these customers can then pay to have that title delivered direct to their devices at home.

This is the video games retailer of 2023. A marketing vehicle as much as a shop, with digital its friend and not its enemy.

And it?s something publishers seem interested in, too. Pop-up shops and concessions dedicated to specific brands are becoming ever more prevalent. Activision ran a temporary Call of Duty: Black Ops II live venue during the game?s launch in London to let consumers get hands-on with the title, while the same publisher also launched Skylanders concessions in three major HMV outlets? during the same period.

The same publisher opened Skylanders concessions in three major HMV outlets during the same period. And historically Nintendo and Sony have both taken space in John Lewis' Oxford Street outlet dedicated to its products, and there?s been pop-up shops for Ubisoft's Child of Eden and Moshi Monsters.

?Our pop up shop was at the start of 2011,? recalls Andy Matjaszek, senior marketing manager at Moshi Monster developer Mind Candy.

"At that time our physical presence was still in its infancy so it was great for us to understand how well the brand was transitioning into the wider physical market place. The pop-up shop allowed us to build on the ever growing exposure for the online game and helped position us as a brand to watch for the future.

"From a marketing standpoint, the exposure we received from the shop helped us have further conversations with potential partners such as Activision when positioning the brand and its overall potential to produce and distribute other Moshi products."

?

- Andy Matjaszek, Mind Candy

?

And it?s this sort of activity that may define the future of video games on the High Street.

Mulroy concludes: ?I foresee video games stores and departments being rebranded for three or four weeks around a new product release. The Xbox store or FIFA 14 store could become a reality this year.

?This community led experience is how games retail will survive on tomorrow?s High Street.?

Movie Review: 'Warm Bodies' an Awesome Zombie Valentine ...

No, it's not an ode to necrophilia. It is a charming and whimsical movie that goes deeper than anyone would expect about connectedness, trust and a willingness to change.?

I never thought I'd say "this zombie flick is a great date movie," but now I have. As a matter of warning, it should be rated "Z" for brain-eating zombies. Still, a large cross-section of movie lovers will enjoy it, making it a far better choice?February 14th?than that new Diehard (coming out that day! Wah?),?for everyone from girlfriends hanging out and Twihards, to couples who don't mind a bit of edge in their flicks.?

Playing at Kingstowne 16 and the AMC Hoffman 22.

To all those who have heard or bought into the press about it being a wannabe Twilight clone, I say yes, the Twihards will appreciate it. But it will be even more appreciated by all of us who grew tired of Twilight's whining and negativity (however much it was dressed in sparkle), and those of us who wanted to scream at that mopey sad-sack Edward to suck it up and get an afterlife.

Warm Bodies plays fast and loose with zombie rules

Here, in this movie, the undead are anything but resigned to their plight. ? Warm Bodies has an optimism, unabashed romanticism and earnestness that is perfect for a holiday about love.?It might be too much for the most cynical filmgoers, even with the dried blood and rotting body bits with which it's smeared. ?

Stay far away if you only like your zombies terrifying and the stuff of nightmares. Stay away as well if you are a stickler for the rules of zombie-ism, as you will find Warm Bodies plays a little too fast and loose with those rules.? As yet another mash-up, this time of zombies and coming-of-age romcoms (a "zomcom," if you will) Cinema Siren does believe it adds something worthwhile to both genres.?

The story is about R, a zombie who lets us into his conflicted, less-dead-than-we-think brain, as he trudges with the rest of the rotting pack. He takes a Cupid's bullet to the heart when he sees gun-toting Julie, out with her med-foraging friends, about to become the next zombie Happy Meal. He rescues her and whisks her away to the nick-nack-filled jet airplane this nostalgic zombie packrat calls home, where they share a few sweetly awkward days and nights getting to know each other.?

Actor Nicholas Hoult, as 'R,' is the star

Love spreads like a scarlet pillow? The rest of the movie is them against the world, which includes Julie's protective dad (the underused John Malkovitch), a post-apocalyptic general with a quick trigger finger for all things undead. ?

Aussie ingenue Teresa Palmer, who forever strains against the label of the "blonde Kristen Stewart," does well enough as Julie, the love interest for an undead 20-something who finds he feels more and more alive when she is near.?

R is the star. Actor Nicholas Hoult (About A Boy, X-Men: First Class) is the one who must carry the film on his slumped and shambling frame. He plays a character who feels isolated, misunderstood and trapped inside a shell that belies his inner sweetness.?

Director enhances novel on the big screen

It's probably hard to make friends and make time when you smell like death, speak in grunts and eat human flesh to survive. He works his way through a wide range of emotions, in scenes that require him to play both broadly and with subtlety in quick succession. ?With natural talent, expanding skill and now adult and undeniable good looks, Hoult will catapult himself into position as an "A" actor with his pick of constantly revolving projects. ?

Rob Coddry's "M," R's "BZF," allows the actor to bring his great character acting and perfect timing to the proceedings, and gets big laughs that mean his memorable role might quickly become a fan favorite. He makes impressive use of scant screen time, further perking up the auds with his every arrival.

Director and screenplay writer Jonathan Levine (who made the surprisingly successful cancer dramedy 50/50) makes the depth of the original novel, written by Isaac Marion, translate very well to the screen, keeping and sometimes even enhancing the metaphoric lessons both great and small, which range from tackling racism and bigotry, to youth alienation, to cocooning and isolation in the computer age.?

There is also a literary reference you might already have heard about or figured out that is far more meaningful if you know well the original from which it takes inspiration.

Soundtracks builds emotional atmosphere

The soundtrack proves to be a mix of clever and poignant. Levine allows the music, some of which is made up of cheesy '80s hits you'll never hear the same way again, to be an integral part of the scene. It builds an emotional atmosphere and adds a component that connects with the audience during the extended times where voiceover narration and slowly shuffling zombies might call a screeching halt to the movie's forward movement. The best soundtracks do that.

To be sure, the end of the movie arrives in a swell of sweet that might as well have us all singing Todd Rundgren's "Love Is The Answer," but that's what romcoms do. The difference is this is a zomcom. Either you can abide this funky freaky little film, with its conceits and exposed beating heart or you can't.

I can, and I absolutely loved it. You might find you do, too. One thing's for sure, your significant other is probably not going to be willing to sit through The Walking Dead on Valentine's Day. With Warm Bodies, you get zombies and love, all tied up in a big bloody-caked bow. Make it a Valentine's Day present to yourself. ?

Poor mental health leads to unhealthy behaviors among low-income adults

Feb. 4, 2013 ? Study says binge drinking, smoking, and illegal drug use may be used to cope with depression and anxiety

Poor mental health leads to unhealthy behaviors in low-income adults - not the other way around, according to a new study? by Dr. Jennifer Walsh and colleagues from the Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine at The Miriam Hospital in the US. In this study, stress and anxiety predicted subsequent health-compromising behaviors, such as smoking, binge drinking, illegal drug use, unprotected sex and unhealthy diets. One possible explanation for these findings is that health compromising behaviors may be used as coping mechanisms to manage the effects of stress and anxiety. The study is published online in the Springer journal, Translational Behavioral Medicine?, and is part of an issue focusing on multiple health behavior change.

Dr. Walsh and her team explored the relationship between health-compromising behaviors and mental health in the context of socioeconomic disadvantage to determine whether mental health problems lead to subsequent unhealthy behaviors, or whether these behaviors lead to mental health problems.

A total of 482 adults, receiving care at a sexually transmitted infection clinic, took part in the study. They were asked to complete an online interview at the start of the study and then three, six, nine and twelve months later. The researchers assessed a number of behaviors: substance use (binge drinking, smoking, illegal drug use), exercise, as well as sexual, dietary and sleep behaviors. They also measured levels of anxiety, depression and perceived stress.

Health-compromising behaviors, including substance use, unprotected sex, poor diet and insufficient or excessive sleep, were common among patients attending the clinic. Participants with very low incomes reported a higher number of health-compromising behaviors, as well as more symptoms of depression and anxiety and higher levels of stress, compared to those participants with higher incomes.

The authors found that symptoms of depression and anxiety, as well as perceived stress, predicted later levels of unhealthy behaviors, when both socioeconomic status and earlier behaviors were taken into account. In contrast, unhealthy behaviors did not predict later mental health. These results show that unhealthy behaviors follow depression, anxiety and stress, rather than giving rise to them.

The authors suggest that targeting mental health may offer a way to promote improvements across health behaviors: "Clinicians and practitioners should recognize that there may be high rates of depression, anxiety and stress, as well as health-compromising behaviors, in low-income populations, and they should assess mental health as well as these behaviors." Referring patients for mental health counselling or stress reduction techniques may help to improve their health behaviors.
