Nokia in Q3 net loss as sales continue plunge

HELSINKI (AP) — Nokia reported Tuesday a third-quarter net loss as sales at the handsets unit it is selling to Microsoft continued to plunge. But the company gave a positive outlook on its continuing operations, including networks, causing the share price to rise.

Third-quarter net loss of 91 million euros ($125 million) compared with a net loss of 969 million euros a year earlier, while revenue fell more than 20 percent to 5.6 billion euros.

The struggling company said it sold 8.8 million Lumia smartphones, a 40 percent increase from 3 million a year earlier and slightly more than markets had expected.

But that was not enough to keep Nokia Corp. from giving a negative outlook for the devices and services unit it has agreed to sell to Microsoft Corp. for $7.2 billion.

Net sales of devices and services fell by 19 percent in the quarter, to 2.9 billion euros, and it sold 64.6 million mobile devices in the period — down from 83 million a year earlier.

Although smartphone sales were up near 9 million, they lagged well behind chief competitors Apple with quarterly sales of 33.8 million and China's Huawei's at 13 million. Even South Korean LG, with 12.7 million units, and Lenovo of China, which sold 11 million, surged past the former world No. 1 that once commanded a global market share with 50 percent. Samsung Electronics, the world leader, sold more than 88 million smartphones in the third quarter.

Without the loss-making handset unit, the Finnish phone maker can look forward to better earnings from its more profitable networks business — Nokia Solutions and Networks, or NSN, which saw 33-percent growth in net profit in the period.

It expects NSN to have a positive operating margin of some 12 percent, with "solid net sales growth on a sequential basis." Nokia announced the purchase of the Siemens half of its 2007 networks joint venture for $2.2 billion this year.

Nokia has also pinned hopes on its mapping services, known as HERE.

Neil Mawston from Strategy Analytics near London said the networks figures were "reasonably good" and would be a short term boost for the Finnish company.

"HERE has some decent prospects, and we see it as being the long term profit driver," Mawston said. "Nokia has a huge market share in maps worldwide and maps are core to a lot of the automotive and shopping experiences out there worldwide."

Mawston said he was also "relatively optimistic" about Nokia's Lumia range.

"All the arrows are pointing in the right direction," he said. "Nokia-Lumia still has a long way to go but at least they are headed in the right direction after going in the wrong direction for so long."

The company's share price jumped more than 6 percent to 5.32 euros in afternoon trading in Helsinki.

Nokia board chairman and interim CEO Risto Siilasmaa described the third quarter as "the most transformative" in the company's history, and was upbeat on the purchase of NSN and the sale of the handsets unit to Microsoft.

"Our strategy work is making good progress and it has already become clear that there are meaningful opportunities for all of our business areas: NSN, HERE and Advanced Technologies," Siilasmaa said. "Subject to the completion of the Microsoft transaction, Nokia will have significantly improved earnings profile, strong financial position and a solid foundation from which to invest."

The company repeated its target to save 3 billion euros in operating costs by the end of 2013. Nokia employed 87,000 people at the end of the period, down from more than 105,000 a year earlier.

SMS messages, animated gifs and location sharing to come to Hangouts app for Android

Big changes are coming to the Android Hangouts client

As expected. Google has announced a few new features to the Android Hangouts app during their Google+ event today. There are three new features coming:

• Locations sharing
• Animated gif support in chats
• SMS messaging support

We reckon the first two have their fans, and we can see that they would be useful, but let's be honest — SMS support is what everyone wanted. With Google's planned changes to the messaging API we predicted this would happen, and we're glad to see it wasn't announced as a Kit Kat-only feature.

No exact word on when we should see any updates, and Vic Gundotra simply said they were happy to announce this today. We'll be on the lookout for it, and we imagine many of you will be, too.

Barking dogs may have sparked Ariz. family slaying

PHOENIX (AP) — Michael Guzzo was becoming increasingly unhinged.

For months, he complained about incessant dog barking coming from homes all around him. He even put up fliers on doors throughout his Phoenix townhome complex advising people of pet ordinances and fines.

This weekend, police say, the 56-year-old went on a rampage, methodically killing four members of a family who lived next door, along with their two dogs. He then walked across a courtyard and tried to kill more neighbors with dogs before he returned home and killed himself.

One of the victims, Renee Moore, "told me all the time the man was crazy," said her mother-in-law, Jacque Alderman, 70. "He just couldn't stand the dogs."

Also killed in the Saturday shooting were Moore's father, Bruce Moore, 66; her husband, Michael Moore, 42, who used his wife's last name; and her son, Shannon Moore, 17.

While Guzzo's motive died with him, neighbors and family members of the victims pointed to his growing annoyance with noise from neighborhood dogs.

"He hated them. But everyone here has dogs," said Joni Flood, 27, who lives a few doors down from the victims.

Libni Deleon, 26, said he returned home from work just a few months ago to find Guzzo standing by his back gate, where Deleon's two dogs were on the patio barking.

"He said, 'Your dogs are barking. I'm here to live in peace,'" Deleon recalled.

Moments after Saturday's killings, Guzzo went back to Deleon's home and began kicking on the front door.

Deleon's wife, Vanessa, had just gotten out of the shower. She grabbed their two children and ran upstairs to hide in the bathtub.

Libni Deleon went toward the door as Guzzo blasted two holes through it, sending about 20 shotgun pellets into the walls at the back of their home.

He ran upstairs to get his gun, opened the window and began to yell at Guzzo, who opened fire again before walking back to his own home to kill himself.

"I feel pretty darn lucky," Libni Deleon said.

The victims' family members, meanwhile, are struggling to come to grips with their loss, dumbfounded by the sheer senselessness of the killings.

Standing amid pools of drying blood on the home's back patio where the two men were apparently shot first, Michael Moore's brother called the killings "angering beyond belief."

"It just angers me looking at all this because I just feel for my brother," said Patrick Riley, 41. "The helplessness."

The patio wall was chipped with pockmarks from the shotgun's blast. Police haven't given specific details of the attack, but Riley said he thinks Guzzo shot his brother over a 6-foot cinderblock fence while he worked on an engine.

"He had no idea what was coming," Riley said. Bruce Moore was killed a few feet away near the patio door to the home.

Riley said police told him Guzzo killed the two men first, then walked through the family's unlocked front door and shot Renee, her son, Shannon, and the dogs.

The killer was no stranger to the family, even though they had little contact with him, Alderman said. Renee Moore had told her repeatedly that Guzzo hated the dogs.

Alderman sobbed Monday as she stood outside the home while other family members gathered on the porch where the two men, including her son, were shot.

"I don't want to see the blood," she said with a heavy sigh.

Phoenix Sgt. Steve Martos said authorities can only speculate on a motive for the killings.

"If he had left a note, maybe," Martos said, "but nothing like that occurred in this case."

TV Ratings: World Series Scores Again, 'The Voice' Holds

The World Series continues to score on Fox, with preliminary returns giving the fifth game between the Boston Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals a tentative 3.8 rating with adults 18-49 and 13.2 million viewers. That demo rating, which currently has it tied with NBC, is almost certain to rise with time-zone adjustments. (Last year's Game 5, which also scored a 3.8 in early returns, rose to a 4.2 rating.) In viewership, the game is already pacing ahead of last year's comparable outing by 2 percent.

Despite the increased competition, The Voice remained steady on NBC, averaging a 4.2 rating among adults 18-49 -- losing just a tenth of a point from last week. The Blacklist, which continues to dominate fellow freshman dramas in Live+Seven and Live+Three returns, improved by a tenth for a 3.1 rating in the key demo. NBC took a 3.8 rating for the night and 12.2 million viewers.

Over on CBS, a relatively steady How I Met Your Mother (2.9 adults), down just a tenth of a point, led into a slightly boosted 2 Broke Girls (2.6 adults) -- which was up by the same measure. Mom (2.1 adults) dropped two-tenths of a point from last week, while Hostages (1.3 adults) improved by a tenth of a point from last week. CBS is banking on further boosts to the lineup next week, when 9 p.m.'s Big Bang Theory encore is replaced by the return of Mike & Molly. The network posted a 2.1 rating among adults 18-49 and 6.6 million viewers for the night.

Dancing With the Stars (2.0 adults) held even with last week's showing on ABC, while Castle (2.1 adults) improved by two-tenths of a point. The network took a 2.0 adults rating and 12.2 million viewers.

Hart of Dixie (0.4 adults) and Beauty and the Beast (0.3 adults) both retained last week's scores on The CW, giving the network a 0.4 adults rating and 999,000 viewers for the night.

Today is my bridal shower. The Hollywood home I share with my fiance is filled with gift bags, balloons, champagne, hors d'oeuvres, activities, love, romance, music, an avalanche of girlfriends baring bridal goodies of lingerie, words of advice, and tales of "Do you remember whens?" This is the first event leading up to marrying the man I love, Jared Harris, who you probably know as Lane Pryce from Mad Men. This is the start of a slew of celebrations that will culminate in our wedding in just three weeks' time. I still can't believe we got here.

Our story...Jared and I met at Bar Lubitsch in April 2009. At the time, neither of us could have predicted this day would come. He was suffering through the final throes of a particularly nasty divorce, and I was at my lowest, most miserable moment. I had moved to L.A. for love, and it was not going as planned. That evening I was desperate for a laugh. Jared had the same thought, and we ended up making the same decision to peel ourselves off our respective couches to see a mutual friend visiting from NYC do stand-up. 

At the end of the show, all the people who had come out to support our comedian pal met up and continued having a laugh well into the night. I can't begin to express how good it was to laugh, and how sad I felt for not being able to enjoy that feeling in my crumbling relationship. Much champagne was enjoyed, friends were made, and that's when Jared and I met. When I went home that night, I reflected on all the nice people who were there, and how good it felt to be out. I decided to have the same experience the next night.

On Thursdays in the back room of Bar Lubitsch, there is a free comedy show hosted by Josh Weinstein and Josh Haness aptly called "The Josh & Josh Show." Our friend from NYC was performing again. My girlfriend Valerie and I snagged a table and noticed Jared at the bar. Remembering him from the night before, we invited him to sit with us. Another mercifully fun night of comedy ensued, and we learned more about each other. Jared seemed to be a very pleasant guy who was going through his own personal hell. All I talked about that evening was how my relationship was in shambles and how frustrating it was to feel trapped and alone after I'd moved from NYC to be with the guy. Thank goodness for the comedy show, because our explanations of our situations were most miserable and depressing.

After exchanging phone numbers at the end of the night, I went to the home I shared with my boyfriend and struggled on in that relationship for another four months. I'd text Jared every month to make sure he hadn't drifted further into the abyss, and we'd exchange some pleasantries here and there, but we never made plans. Which was fine, as I hadn't planned on dating him; I thought maybe we could be "misery friends" and cheer each other up once in a while.

I finally had the strength to leave the person I moved to L.A. for in August 2009. I cried every day and was completely heartbroken. Everything seemed incredibly bleak, and I hated being stuck in L.A. It was so bad that even my friends were worried about me, which made me feel worse. I'm not the type of person to act that way, but bad relationships can happen even to the best of us.

I really needed a ridiculous karaoke night to scream out my frustrations. Remembering Jared was interested in karaoke, too -- I hadn't contacted him in months, and was wondering how my "misery friend" was doing -- I texted him to see if he'd be interested in joining. That Sunday night, he picked me up and we went to karaoke. That night had everything. It had singing, dancing, laughter -- I even slapped some guy who wouldn't stop harassing me. Hilarity ensued for sure.

Jared and I started planning fun outings to cheer us up, as we both were still mired in misery. We went to comedy shows to laugh, concerts to dance and act like we could sing, then karaoke to be reminded of how poorly we actually do sing... We even went to Magic Mountain to ride roller coasters. We just kept doing things that were bound to entertain, and slowly we stopped being miserable. Eventually, we just wanted to do everything together. Then, against all rhyme or reason and all the odds, our heavily damaged hearts began to heal. Laughter, as they say, truly is the best medicine. We fell in love and swore never to speak of marriage, as our last relationships ruined the thought of it.

Flash forward four years, and I have a sparkly rock on my ring finger and am surrounded by a gaggle of good friends at my bridal shower. Stranger things have happened, I'm sure, but if you knew us during the "misery friends" stage, you would never have seen this coming. If I had said to you, "I'm having a custom ring made by Erica Courtney and a custom gown by Monique Lhuillier, and am getting married in Miami Beach on the Lady Windridge yacht, with an after-party at the Eden Roc," you would have said, "YEAH RIGHT, ALLEGRA...," and we would have laughed and laughed and laughed some more, because that did not at all seem like my path.

When people from New York warn you about moving to L.A., they always say: 1) You'll never make real friends, and 2) You'll never meet someone to love you. I can confirm these cynical notions are false, as my life since meeting Jared has been nothing short of wonderful, and love-filled. Life is good, and gets better.

Motorola's new smartphone: Digital Legos

We might finally have a hint of what Google spent its money on when it acquired Motorola Mobility: a really customizable line of smartphones.

How customizable? Think Legos.

Motorola just announced a new initiative called Project Ara, which the company describes as a "free, open hardware platform for creating highly modular smartphones." The concept aims to do for Android hardware what Android has done for the smartphone OS environment: make the phone itself a modular construction where pieces can be added, removed, swapped out, or upgraded at will.

Another project in this same vein, Phonebloks, must have caught Motorola's attention, because it contacted the creator of that concept, Dave Hakkens, and is working with him attract to Project Ara the attention of folks interested in his project.

Project Ara's approach involves two types of components, a basic skeleton (what Motorola calls an "endo," short for "endoskeleton") and modules that snap into the endo. The modules could theoretically be anything from multiple batteries to additional displays or keyboards. It clearly goes far beyond the ho-hum color-and-finish customization that Motorola offered with the Moto X.

Tough to make...
It doesn't take an EE degree to grok the technical challenges involved in making something this deliberately open-ended. The basic idea of having components that snap into a backplane has been a mainstay of computing for decades, but it's going to be very tough sledding indeed to make it work well on the scale needed for a smartphone. It may not be possible to make the resulting product anywhere as thin as the phones most people are accustomed to, if only because thinness also means fragility.

Motorola's outreach for this project is spanning multiple domains. The company is inviting people worldwide to become what it calls "Ara Scouts," folks who can work as a street team for the project and get the word out to people -- including those who don't already have a smartphone "or a phone at all." This implies Motorola is aiming at markets that haven't had smartphone penetration yet and where the "Nokia brick" form factor is still the standard.

Motorola has actually been beating the drum for this project longer than most people realize. Back in March, Motorola adviser Guy Kawasaki posted on Google+ how great it would be if a phone could be customized like a Porsche Exclusive. To a degree, we already do this -- via add-on Bluetooth-connected hardware, cases, and software -- but Motorola's talking about a level of customization that might be intimidating to most users.

... and maybe just as tough to market
Part of the popularity of the iPhone lies in its simplicity. Apple keeps few iterations of the product on the market at any given time, because it knows after a certain point a wider range of choices becomes counterproductive (aka the "paradox of choice"). Project Ara might face major hurdles with regular users for the same reason: Do most people really want to be forced to make that many choices about the construction of their phone?

Maybe not out of the gate. One possible scenario is that users could purchase one of a number of basic pre-assembled Ara models, then enjoy the freedom to customize it later -- and in the long run enjoy more customization and more longevity of the product than most any Apple user.

Project Ara might never displace Apple, the way Android hasn't really displaced Apple but instead consolidated the respective niches for each product family. But Ara would be one heck of an alternative -- and not just to Apple, but to the phone world as we currently know it.
